In-Depth Reviews

“The WinkBed captures the quintessential balanced feel of a hybrid mattress, with plush foam layers and a sturdy coil base. Four of our field testers have slept on a WinkBed for at least a year, and they unanimously agree the bed offers superlative support while still giving you plenty of cushioning.” – Tom Ryan, Head of Product Testing

  • Pros

    1. Extra-strong edge support extends around the entire perimeter

    2. Doesn’t hold on to much heat and stays cool all night

    3. Highly durable and an excellent value

  • Cons

    1. Lacks enough pressure relief for people with serious pressure point pain

    2. Allows some movement to transfer from side to side

    3. Not available as a split king

The WinkBed is a versatile hybrid mattress that offers even body-contouring and strong overall support. Four firmness levels are available. During our hands-on tests, each member of our team found at least one firmness option that provided enough cushioning without sinking too much beneath their weight. A generous return and exchange policy further incentivizes couples who aren’t sure whether a softer or firmer mattress is best for them.

What It’s Made of

All WinkBed mattresses feature a Euro-top surface padded with adaptive polyfoam. This material conforms to the body without hugging too closely, making the mattress a good alternative for people who don’t like sleeping on memory foam. A transitional polyfoam layer adds extra cushioning while maintaining an even sleep surface. The support core contains pocketed coils with a zoned configuration to ensure a stable perimeter and extra reinforcement around the torso and hips. A cover made of breathable Tencel encases the entire mattress.

We found each firmness level distinct and well suited to certain types of sleepers. Those who prefer plush sleep surfaces should opt for the medium soft (4) feel, which provides deep contouring to alleviate pressure points along the spine – a common issue for side sleepers. The back and stomach sleepers on our team preferred the enhanced support of the medium firm (6) and firm (7) feels. People who weigh more than 230 pounds should consider the WinkBed Plus, a firm (8) model specifically designed for sleepers in this weight group. The Plus swaps out the adaptive polyfoam for a comfort layer of zoned latex that feels highly supportive and responsive.

How It Performed

The WinkBed earned excellent ratings during our temperature control tests. Air circulates freely throughout the coil system and the Tencel cover is both breathable and moisture-wicking, so the mattress should be comfortable for people who tend to sleep hot or sweat in bed. Edge support is another major strength of the WinkBed. Our testers noticed generous pushback when lying near or sitting along the perimeter of the mattress. This was particularly true for the firm and Plus models.

Other performance ratings varied by firmness level. Ease of movement was an area where the firmer models excelled. Our testers were able to scoot across the surface of these beds without feeling trapped or stuck. The medium soft model earned the highest marks for motion isolation, so people who are easily awakened by their partner’s movements may want to consider this firmness level.

The WinkBed is competitively priced for a hybrid and ground delivery is free for all customers in the contiguous U.S. Each mattress comes with a 120-night sleep trial. If you are dissatisfied with your initial choice, you may exchange the mattress for a model with a different firmness level at no extra cost. Return shipping is free and your replacement also comes with a trial period. You’ll also receive a lifetime warranty that covers structural defects for as long as you retain original ownership of the mattress.

“The DreamCloud’s close contouring is impressive for a hybrid, especially at this price-point. The coils create a strong support system, but our testers felt plenty of cushioning from the foam layers.” – Logan Foley, Managing Editor

  • Pros

    1. More affordable than many comparable luxury hybrids

    2. Isolates motion without restricting movement

    3. Great pressure relief for a hybrid

  • Cons

    1. Doesn’t have any perimeter reinforcement

    2. Too firm for most side sleepers under 130 pounds

    3. Not as responsive as some couples like for sex

The DreamCloud Mattress is one of the most balanced hybrids on the market today. The mattress features a deep comfort system with three foam layers and a robust pocketed coil system. These components ensure even contouring and sturdy support, while a medium firm (6) feel means most people who weigh at least 130 pounds can rest comfortably without sinking too much.

What It’s Made of

The DreamCloud begins with a layer of adaptive polyfoam quilted into its cover, followed by a memory foam comfort layer. Although the mattress is on the firmer side, these components give the surface a plush feel when you get into bed. A dense polyfoam transitional layer, pocketed coil system, and foam base layer stabilize the mattress and reinforce the edges against deep sinkage. Cashmere-blend fabric encases the entire mattress. The DreamCloud Mattress is considered a high-profile model.

How It Performed

The DreamCloud Mattress outperforms many of its hybrid competitors in terms of pressure relief and motion isolation. This can be attributed to its triple-layer comfort system, which helps the mattress contour closely without sacrificing support. Cooling is another key strength. Air circulates freely throughout the coil system to help the mattress maintain a reasonable internal temperature, while the cashmere-blend cover is breathable and also has moisture-wicking properties.

Among our testing team, the DreamCloud Mattress earned the most favorable ratings from side sleepers weighing between 130 and 230 pounds. Back and stomach sleepers up to 230 pounds also found the mattress comfortable and didn’t report any excessive sinkage.

The DreamCloud Mattress has a below-average price-point for a hybrid and ground shipping is free for all customers in the contiguous U.S. The company’s 365-night sleep trial is one of the longest in the industry, and those who choose to keep the mattress also receive a lifetime warranty against structural defects.

“Helix’s Dusk Luxe is exceptionally balanced thanks to a pairing of foam comfort layers and multi-zoned pocketed coils. The result is a mattress that feels luxuriously plush on the surface without sacrificing stability.” – Jeremy Klein, Senior Product Expert

  • Pros

    1. Deep foam layers provide close, even cushioning

    2. Coils are zoned and reinforced along the perimeter to ensure sturdy support

    3. Cover is composed of heat-dissipating GlacioTex fabric

  • Cons

    1. Initial off-gassing odor can be fairly strong

    2. High-end pricing may be a barrier for shoppers with limited budgets

    3. Sleepers over 230 pounds may need more support

Comfort is subjective, and your definition of what feels comfortable may differ from your partner’s. That said, the Helix Dusk Luxe is a true crowd-pleaser. Three foam layers make up the comfort system to deliver a cradling, cloud-like surface, while robust zoned coils provide great overall support. Thanks to the medium firm (6) design, this model was one of the most popular Helix Luxe mattresses among our testing team.

What It’s Made of

Like other Luxe models, the Dusk Luxe begins with a Euro-top containing three foam layers. Adaptive polyfoam provides a close contour for your body, while underlying memory foam and transitional foam layers are denser — this creates additional cushioning while also pushing back against your weight and keeping your body on an even plane.

The support core consists of pocketed coils and base foam. Thicker coils rest beneath your torso and hips to prevent excessive sinkage around the midsection. The perimeter coils are also reinforced, so you shouldn’t compress the edges too much when getting in and out of bed. This also means you and your partner can use the entire mattress surface instead of being confined to the middle. A cover made of cooling GlacioTex fabric encases the mattress.

How It Performed

Helix designs each mattress with certain types of sleepers in mind. Although the Dusk Luxe was originally created for back and stomach sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds, our hands-on tests show the mattress is also a great fit for side sleepers in this weight range. Gentle contouring, a light bounce, and strong coil support give the Dusk Luxe a well-rounded feel — there’s noticeable cushioning, but not the same level of sinkage we’ve seen in mattresses with thick foam layers. People who weigh more than 230 pounds should consider a firmer Helix Luxe model, though.

The GlacioTex cover effectively keeps the surface cool, so there shouldn’t be much — if any — heat retention in the foam layers. We also gave the mattress favorable ratings for edge support and motion isolation, two of the most important criteria for couples.

The Dusk Luxe’s sticker price is fairly high, but Helix softens the blow with free shipping throughout the contiguous U.S. and a complimentary pillow set with each purchase. The sleep trial runs for 100 nights. If you decide to keep the mattress after the trial ends, you’ll also receive a 15-year warranty against structural and material defects.

“The Nectar Copper Premier is a great pick for co-sleepers who wake each other up. During our motion isolation tests, we noticed virtually no transfer of movement across the mattress’ surface thanks to its thick foam layers.” – Jeremy Klein, Senior Product Expert

  • Pros

    1. Scored top marks during our motion isolation tests

    2. All-foam construction alleviates pressure point pain

    3. Lengthy 365-night sleep trial

  • Cons

    1. Edges sag under pressure

    2. Not ideal for intimacy

The all-foam Nectar Premier Copper is a luxe model that blends pressure relief and support. Its medium firm (6) feel and contouring memory foam is most comfortable for side sleepers, though back sleepers under 130 pounds also found it appealing. While this model has an above-average price-point for an all-foam mattress, it’s full of features that are attractive to many sleepers.

What It’s Made of

This model’s cover blends polyester with materials like copper and polyethylene, which aim to wick away heat and moisture to help you stay cool. The thick memory foam layer that tops the comfort system has gel and phase change material to further regulate temperature. This layer compresses with your weight, cradling your hips and shoulders to absorb impact and alleviate pressure point discomfort.

A thick transitional layer of polyfoam rests between the gel-infused memory foam and support core, keeping you situated comfortably on top of the mattress. The support core is composed of high-density polyfoam that anchors the mattress and keeps your spine evenly aligned. A no-slip base ensures that your mattress stays put.

How It Performed

All-foam mattresses often excel at isolating motion and the Nectar Premier Copper is no exception. When sleeping on an innerspring or exceptionally responsive model, you may be able to feel your partner move on their side of the bed. On the Nectar Premier Copper, you can switch sleeping positions without waking your partner. The foam layers absorb movement where it occurs rather than allowing it to transfer across the bed.

Nectar ships its mattress for free within the contiguous U.S. and offers customers a generous 365-night sleep trial. A lifetime limited warranty covers impressions deeper than 1.5 inches and manufacturer defects.

“With three firmness options to choose from, most side sleepers should be able to find a Nolah Evolution model that suits their body type and personal preferences. The cushioning in all three firmness levels is impressive, so you can expect deep cradling for the shoulders and hips.” — Jeremy Klein, Senior Product Expert

  • Pros

    1. Three firmness options available

    2. Thick comfort system offers ample pressure relief for the shoulders and hips

    3. Cooling features help minimize heat buildup

  • Cons

    1. Coils produce noticeable motion transfer

    2. Some sleepers may notice foam off-gassing right after unboxing

The Nolah Evolution 15 is a foam hybrid that comes in three firmness options. Each firmness has a distinct feel to support different types of sleepers. Proprietary polyfoam comfort layers cradle the body, which is ideal for side sleepers who are prone to pressure buildup in their joints.

What It’s Made of

A cover made with ArcticTex cooling fibers encases the Evolution. These fibers are meant to keep the surface cool to the touch. Cooling polyfoam is also quilted into the cover to help enhance temperature neutrality. The comfort layers start with proprietary AirFoamICE polyfoam. This foam is infused with graphite, engineered to conduct heat away from the body and dissipate it. Next is another layer of polyfoam to deepen contouring and relieve pressure.

A transitional layer of high-density polyfoam acts as a cushion between the comfort layers and the support core. Pocketed coils make up the support core, surrounded by a polyfoam rail to reinforce the edges of the mattress. The coils rest on a base layer made from plant fiber for extra stability.

How It Performed

The Evolution’s firmness options – medium (5), medium firm (6), and firm (8) – appeal to a variety of sleepers. Side sleepers across all weight categories should find a design that suits their support needs. Those under 130 pounds and sleepers with pressure-induced pain in their hips or shoulders might prefer the extra contour from the medium feel. Sleepers who are at least 130 pounds may appreciate the medium firm or firm feels.

The two firmer feels also rank highly among hot sleepers, since they provide less of a body hug and thus don’t trap as much heat. Enhanced airflow through the pocketed coils also helps to regulate temperature.

Nolah ships free to the contiguous U.S. and offers a 120-night sleep trial. Nolah Evolution 15 purchases come with a lifetime warranty.

“Some beds favor one sleep position more than others, but the Leesa Sapira Hybrid offers an even balance of support and cushioning that benefits multiple sleep positions. I’m also impressed by the cooling design, which you don’t find in all foam hybrids.” — Logan Foley, Managing Editor

  • Pros

    1. Three foam layers gently conform to the body to relieve pressure buildup

    2. Perforated polyfoam and air circulation through the coils help keep the surface cool

    3. Reinforced perimeter helps minimize sagging along the edges

The Leesa Sapira Hybrid combines the contouring of foam with the responsiveness of coils to create a well-rounded mattress that’s compatible with a wide range of sleepers with different sleep preferences. The bed’s versatility makes it a good match for people who switch sleep positions throughout the night.

What It’s Made of

The mattress begins with a polyfoam layer perforated with channels to help ventilate the bed surface. Beneath is a memory foam layer that promotes even contouring throughout the body, followed by a transitional layer of polyfoam that enhances cushioning but has a higher density to prevent the body from sinking too deep. The support core features a coil system with extra support around the edges to reduce sagging when you sleep or sit along the perimeter of the bed.

How It Performed

One of the bed’s standout qualities is pressure relief, which we attribute to the adaptive memory foam and polyfoam layers. People with painful pressure points benefit from the generous cradling on the bed’s surface. We also found the bed surprisingly cool despite the heat-retaining properties of foam. The perforated design and airflow through the coils both helped minimize overheating.

The bed is best suited for back and stomach sleepers under 130 pounds and side sleepers who weigh at least 130 pounds. That said, side sleepers under 130 pounds and back sleepers who weigh 130 pounds or more may still find the mattress comfortable depending on personal preferences.

Leesa ships the mattress free to all 50 states. You’ll receive 100 nights to try out the mattress at home, during which you may return the bed for a refund. Beyond the trial, the mattress is backed by a 10-year warranty.

“The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid comes in three firmness options, but each model has a balanced foam-and-coil design that feels comfortable for a variety of body types and sleep positions. Versatile beds like this are a dream for combination sleepers.” – Jeremy Klein, Senior Product Expert

    2. Foam comfort system relieves pressure points by contouring to the body

The Signature Hybrid from Brooklyn Bedding is a well-rounded bed that comes in three firmness levels. While the various options provide different levels of plushness, they all excel in pressure relief while maintaining sturdy support. People across different sleep positions should benefit from this balanced design.

What It’s Made of

The bed is available in medium soft (4), medium firm (6), and firm (8) designs. The materials and construction vary slightly with each firmness option, but all models begin with a quilted surface that gently cushions your body. Beneath is a polyfoam layer with a moderately responsive feel, followed by a layer of proprietary VariFlex foam that buffers your body from the support core. The VariFlex foam in the two softer models offers deeper compression than the VariFlex in the firmest model.

All three options feature a sturdy coil system in the support core, with reinforced perimeter coils to boost edge support. The cover is made of soft cotton, and you can upgrade to a cooling pillow-top on any of the models. This option adds thicker cushioning and a cover made with a heat-regulating material.

How It Performed

If you’re looking for a bed that offers significant contouring without too much sinkage, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid hits the right marks. We found that the foam comfort system provides excellent pressure relief regardless of which firmness level you pick. The two softer models also isolated motion very well during our tests, making these options a good choice for co-sleepers who wake each other up with nighttime movement.

Our testers did prefer certain designs based on their body type. The firm option appealed most to back and stomach sleepers over 130 pounds. The medium firm was best suited for sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds, regardless of sleep position. The soft was most comfortable for side sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds and back sleepers under 130 pounds.

The Signature Hybrid comes with a 120-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty. Customers residing in the contiguous U.S. receive free shipping.

“We’ve tested a lot of hybrid models, and the Emma Hybrid Comfort is one of the most balanced in the bunch thanks to adaptive foam layers over a zoned support system. The result is a coil mattress that feels stable, won’t produce too much motion transfer, alleviates pressure, and sleeps cool.” – Logan Foley, Managing Editor

  • Pros

    1. Supportive at the edges for couples who want use of the whole mattress

    2. Stays cool thanks to its hybrid design and open-cell foam

    3. Medium firm feel is a good match for combination sleepers

  • Cons

When it comes to sex, most couples prefer mattresses that provide light cushioning while pushing back against weight and minimizing sinkage. The Emma Hybrid Comfort is a medium firm (6) mattress with a zoned support system to reinforce the heaviest areas of your body without making the entire surface feel overly stiff. Pocketed coils over dense base foam generate some springiness, but not enough to produce disruptive transfer while you’re asleep.

What It’s Made of

The Hybrid Comfort’s topmost layer is composed of adaptive polyfoam, adding a bit of plushness to the surface. Memory foam and transitional foam layers feel firmer and more supportive beneath your torso and hips, so deep sinkage shouldn’t be an issue — even if you and your partner carry extra weight in your midsections.

The support core contains seven-zone pocketed coils and a thick, high-density polyfoam base. You’ll notice some springiness from the coils, but probably not enough to generate disruptive motion transfer for your partner when you move around in bed, and vice versa. A breathable polyester cover encases the mattress.

How It Performed

Since the Hybrid Comfort is softer and more adaptive than many competing hybrid models, the most favorable ratings came from our side sleepers weighing at least 130 pounds, and back and stomach sleepers up to 230 pounds.

Our testers noticed minimal motion transfer when lying side by side on the Hybrid Comfort and the mattress didn’t produce much noise, so we don’t anticipate any sleep disruptions or loud creaks during sex. The internal components also promote enough airflow to help the mattress sleep cool. Pressure relief was another strong performance area during our tests. This is largely due to the relatively firm feel and zoned coil system.

Emma ships the Hybrid Comfort free of charge throughout the contiguous U.S. The company’s 365-night sleep trial is one of the longest in the online mattress industry. If you choose to keep the mattress, you’ll also receive a 10-year warranty against structural defects.

“The flippable Layla Hybrid is a great option for couples who want above-average motion isolation without sacrificing temperature control or coil support. I’ve slept on this mattress for 3 years and love falling into the soft, plush surface at the end of each day.” – Tom Ryan, Head of Product Testing

  • Pros

    1. Flippable design lets you switch between two firmness levels

    2. Zoned support and targeted pressure relief work well for side sleepers

    3. Strong edge support and motion isolation

  • Cons

    1. A bit cumbersome to flip

    3. Lacks responsiveness for sex

If you and your partner both tend to overheat in bed, a cooling mattress can be a solid investment. During numerous rounds of testing, the Layla Hybrid has consistently displayed standout temperature control. We attribute this to open-cell foam layers, a coil system that promotes steady airflow, and a breathable cover. Both sides of this flippable mattress sleep fairly cool, but our team was particularly impressed with the firmer surface.

What It’s Made of

The Layla Hybrid’s medium soft (4) side contains 2.5 inches of memory foam, followed by a 2-inch polyfoam transitional layer. This surface contours closely to promote even alignment and cushion sore spots along the spine. Copper infused into the top layer helps offset the foam’s heat-retaining properties, allowing you to stay cool despite the deep hug. The firm (7) side also features these materials, but the layers are thinner to create a more supportive feel.

Shared pocketed coils in the middle of the mattress provide reinforcement and stability to both sides. The coils are zoned to push back against your midsection without feeling too stiff beneath your head and legs. A stretchy polyester, rayon, viscose, and poly-lycra blend cover encases the mattress. Carrying handles on both sides help you and a partner flip the mattress with relative ease. You can unzip, remove, and machine wash the cover to keep your sleep surface hygienic without spot cleaning.

How It Performed

Our team personally tested both sides of the Layla Hybrid. Due to its close conforming and ample padding, the medium soft side was most comfortable for our side sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds. Back and stomach sleepers under 130 pounds also received adequate support from this surface. The firm side earned favorable ratings from our back and stomach sleepers across all weight groups but those weighing at least 130 pounds were particularly impressed. The same was true for our side sleepers of at least 130 pounds.

During our temperature control tests, thermal sensors revealed little to no heat buildup on the Layla Hybrid’s firm side. We noticed slightly more heat on the medium soft side, but not enough to make any of our testers uncomfortable. The softer surface provided better motion isolation for our testers, while the firmer side felt firmer and more stable along the perimeter.

Layla offers free ground shipping throughout the contiguous U.S. Your purchase comes with a sleep trial spanning 120 nights in length. If you choose to keep your Layla Hybrid, the mattress is further backed by a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty.

“I found the Bear Elite Hybrid checks many boxes for couples and co-sleepers. The mattress compresses under your weight while maintaining a fairly responsive surface, a design that helps alleviate back pain by promoting proper spinal alignment.” – Tom Ryan, Head of Product Testing

  • Pros

    1. Zoned support strategically varies pushback to different parts of the body

    2. Higher-gauge coils beneath the lumbar region target back pain

    3. Very little motion transfer from side to side

    2. Softer model restricts movement

    3. May require deep pocket sheets

Mattresses that best suit couples tend to excel in performance areas like temperature control, motion isolation, edge support, and responsiveness for sex. During our tests, the Bear Elite Hybrid proved a strong contender in all of these categories. With multiple firmness options available, you can pick a model that promotes strong sleep posture for your particular sleep preferences.

What It’s Made of

The Elite Hybrid features a top layer of adaptive memory foam infused with copper that responds slowly to your body. This layer is infused with copper, which has natural cooling properties. A polyfoam transitional layer offers extra cushioning. The foam is divided into five firmness zones to ensure enhanced support for the midsection and more give for a gentler feel around the head and legs.

Pocketed coils and base polyfoam make up the support core. The coils are zoned to boost lumbar support and are thicker along the perimeter, pushing back when you sleep near the edges or get on and off the mattress. A cover made of Celliant-blend fabric encases the mattress. Celliant is an innovative material engineered to capture and dissipate your body heat, maintaining a cool feel at all times.

How It Performed

The Elite Hybrid is available in three firmness levels. We evaluated each design during our hands-on tests, and side and back sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds preferred the light cushioning and robust support of the firm (8) feel. Our stomach sleepers in this weight group also found the firm model most comfortable, but their ratings were slightly less favorable. Based on these results, the foam layers may be too thick for people who favor this position. If you are a side or back sleeper who needs deeper cushioning, the medium (5) or medium firm (6) feels may be more suitable.

The reinforced perimeter allowed the Elite Hybrid to excel during our edge support tests. Cooling is another strength of the mattress, thanks to its cooling Celliant-blend cover and steady airflow throughout the interior. We also found the Elite Hybrid provides above-average motion isolation. While lying side by side on the mattress, our testers noticed minimal motion transfer — even when the other person changed positions or got out of bed.

Bear offers free ground shipping throughout the contiguous U.S. The Elite Hybrid’s sleep trial runs for 120 nights, and those who keep the mattress receive a lifetime warranty.

The Solaire by Saatva is a luxury airbed that can be adjusted from a soft (3) to a firm (8) feel, for a total of 50 firmness levels. If you purchase a queen size or larger, you can even customize a different feel for each half of the mattress, making this a great choice for co-sleepers who have different firmness preferences.

How It Performed

Thanks to the customizable design, the Solaire is a great choice for many sleepers. However, the responsive comfort system best suited the testers on our team who weigh at least 130 pounds across sleep positions. These sleepers found excellent cushioning from the foam and latex without sinking to an excessive degree. People whose firmness needs change from night to night should also appreciate the adjustable design.

The Solaire performed very well across our testing criteria, but it excelled in our sex and temperature neutrality tests. The mattress has a responsive feel conducive to sex that allows couples to move across it with ease. The breathable components and air chamber support core encourage air circulation to keep sleepers cool.

What It’s Made of

A thick Euro-top gives the surface a plush feel, and it’s zoned to offer more support in the lumbar region. This is followed by a layer of aerated Talalay latex that gently cradles the body. This latex has five zones that offer extra support to the lower back while alleviating pressure. Next is a layer of gel-infused memory foam that adapts to the body and relieves pressure points. The gel infusion is meant to absorb and dissipate excess body heat.

The support core is composed of vulcanized air chambers with a baffle box design that ensures even firmness throughout the mattress. A moisture barrier layer above the air chambers protects them from damage and bacterial growth. A perimeter encasement reinforces the edges of the mattress to prevent sagging. This encasement also discretely holds the air inflator and hoses. The cover is made from breathable organic cotton.

Customers living in the contiguous U.S. are eligible for free White Glove delivery. Saatva offers a 365-night sleep trial, during which you can return the mattress for a full refund minus a $99 fee. The Solaire is backed by a lifetime manufacturer’s warranty.

How to Shop for a Mattress as a Couple

When shopping with a partner, you’ll need to keep both of your preferences in mind when choosing between mattress models.

Consider Your Individual Needs, But Be Willing to Compromise

Sharing anything with a partner requires compromise, and that extends to the bedroom. Before shopping, you should each consider your wants and your needs. Needs typically revolve around support and comfort, while wants could be points you’d like to have but could live without, like motion isolation or temperature control.

Consider what you’d each like in your ideal mattress, and identify what you each really need to get a restful night’s sleep and what you could compromise on. It may be tough to find a mattress that’s perfect for two people, especially for couples with very different wants and needs. Narrowing your focus to what you actually need and building out from there can be a helpful way to ensure both partners get a mattress that works for them.

Sleeping Position, Body Weight, and Firmness

When shopping for a mattress, the first step is to identify what kind of support level and firmness option is best for each of your body types and sleeping positions. Side, back, and stomach sleepers require slightly different support and firmness levels to maintain spinal alignment. Your weight also affects how much support you need and which firmness you’ll probably enjoy most.

We measure mattress firmness on a 10-point scale with 1 as the softest mattress and 10 as the firmest. Your body weight affects how deeply you sink into a bed and how firm it feels to you personally. Generally speaking, the more you weigh, the firmer the mattress you need. There’s a good amount of wiggle room here, but partners with very different body types may need to shop around a bit to find a bed that works for both of them.

Your sleeping position also plays a part in what firmness feels right. Side sleepers typically prefer softer models, stomach sleepers usually enjoy firm mattresses, and back sleepers often like something in between. Couples with separate firmness preferences may want to split the difference between their ideal firmness levels and choose one that’s between the two numbers.

We’ve put together a quick reference of our recommendations for firmness ranges using our 10-point scale.

Back, Hip, or Shoulder Pain

Many sleepers complain of back, hip, or shoulder pain while sleeping. If you or your partner experience sleep-related pain, it’s important to look for a mattress with a blend of support and cushioning.

Mattress-related pain often stems from one of two factors: inadequate support for the spine, or a lack of cushioning that puts pressure on the body. Features like zoned support and a contouring comfort system can help keep your spinal posture healthy while ensuring that pressure doesn’t build up beneath your hips, shoulders, or lower back. The right mattress can help with pain, while one without enough support or cushioning can increase it.

What to Consider in a Mattress for Couples

Along with firmness and support levels, you’ll want to keep a few factors in mind when shopping for a mattress with your partner, including, but not limited to, mattress type, price, and performance.

Mattress Type

When narrowing down your mattress search, it’s helpful to first decide on a type of mattress. Popular mattress types include foam, latex, hybrid, and airbed — each of which has its own strengths and drawbacks.

  • Foam: A foam mattress can have comfort layers made from polyfoam, memory foam, or both. They’re typically great at absorbing movement, which is a benefit for couples who wake easily when their partner moves. Foam mattresses are also known for providing excellent pressure relief and they’re often affordably priced, but they tend to trap heat.
  • Latex: Couples who want a responsive mattress that relieves pressure without the “hugging” feeling of foam may want to go for a latex mattress. They’re especially worthwhile for people over 230 pounds and anyone who wants a durable, sustainable mattress. However, latex beds can be expensive and they are heavy and tough to move.
  • Hybrid: Hybrid mattresses are one of the most versatile mattress types. They usually have a pocketed coil support core and a comfort system made from materials like foam, latex, wool, or a combination of materials. They tend to control temperature well and you can find them with a range of different features.
  • Airbed: Instead of foam, latex, or coils, airbeds have a support core that’s made from rubber air chambers that inflate and deflate to provide customized firmness levels. These beds allow you to switch support settings using a remote or a smartphone app. They’re excellent for couples who can’t agree on a firmness level, but they carry a high price-point and can be noisy.

Flippable, Adjustable, and Split-Firmness Mattresses

For some couples, like those with large differences in weight, it can be especially tough to find a mattress with a firmness level that works for both partners. Flippable, adjustable, and split-firmness mattresses give these couples extra options that can make sharing a bed more comfortable.

  • Flippable: Flippable mattresses have a unique build. Each side of the mattress has a different firmness level, so you can swap between firmer or softer sides by turning the mattress over. They’re best for couples who are comfortable compromising with their partner to get their favorite feel part of the time.
  • Adjustable: Most adjustable mattresses are airbeds that provide a range of firmness levels that you can change using a remote or app. Each partner can choose their own firmness level for their side of the bed. Some adjustable models are latex or hybrid mattresses with swappable layers. They’re generally more affordable than airbeds, but it takes a bit of work to adjust the feel.
  • Split-Firmness: Some manufacturers offer the option to purchase a mattress with two firmness levels, one for each half of the bed. They’re usually sold in two pieces as split kings, though you can sometimes find split queens as well as mattresses that are one piece with two firmnesses.

Price and Size

You’ll want to consider the size of your bedroom here, as well as how much space each of you needs to sleep comfortably. Queen beds are pretty standard and typically have plenty of room for two, but some couples prefer full, king, or California king mattresses.

Full size beds fit better in smaller spaces, but couples may feel cramped sharing one. King beds are much wider compared with a queen size, so there’s more room to spread out. California kings are slightly narrower than a standard king but provide additional length for taller sleepers.

Mattress prices can vary depending on what they’re made from as well as their size. Larger models require more materials, as do thicker mattresses, so expect to pay a bit more for bigger beds. Though the cost of a mattress ranges from $200 at the low end to $4,000 or more on the high end, there is an average price-point for each type of mattress.

Mattress TypeAverage Price (Queen)
Foam$1,050
Latex$2,000
Hybrid$2,050
Airbed$2,200

Motion Isolation and Noise

If you wake easily when your partner moves on their side of the bed, you’ll want to look for a bed with strong motion isolation. Materials like polyfoam and memory foam absorb movements and prevent them from traveling across a mattress’ surface. Models that isolate motion well are also usually quiet because foam doesn’t creak or squeak like traditional springs.

Edge Support and Responsiveness

If you’ve ever felt like you can’t spread out and use the whole surface of your bed, you’ll want to consider edge support. A mattress without enough edge support can cause you to roll toward the middle of the bed, limiting how much actual space there is for two people to sleep on. Beds made with reinforced edges provide serious edge support and ensure that you can use the entire mattress. Edge support can also be important for sex, since it allows couples to make use of a mattress’ whole surface area.

If you’ve felt too “stuck” in the bed, whether you’re turning at night or trying to get out of bed, then responsiveness or bounce should be on your radar. A mattress with some bounce is easier for couples to move around on than one that compresses deeply and limits movement.

Temperature Regulation

If you or your partner sleep hot at night and wake up in a sweat, then temperature regulation is important for you. The body heat coming from one person can heat up a bed significantly, and that can double with two people sharing a bed. Mattresses with plenty of airflow and cooling technology can help prevent you from overheating. Hybrid, latex, and airbed models tend to be the most temperature neutral, though some foam mattresses use gel or copper infusions to help fight overheating.

Sleep Trials and Mattress Warranties

It’s important to consider mattress manufacturer policies before committing to a purchase. Many manufacturers offer sleep trials that let you test out a mattress during a specific window to see if you like it. Most range between 100 and 365 nights, but it’s important to read the fine print as well as customer reviews. Some companies charge for returns and others require a break-in period before you can start a return (usually around 30 days).

You should also look at the terms of the mattress’ warranty before purchasing. Some are prorated while others extend over the mattress’ entire lifespan. Most only protect against manufacturer defects and require that you use an appropriate bed base to qualify for coverage.

“When it comes to sleep, everyone’s comfort preferences are different…I recommend investing in an option with a good return policy, so you can try it out for at least a month or so to decide whether it’s comfortable for you.”

Tips for Sharing a Bed Comfortably With a Partner

We’ve put together a few extra tips that you can try for a better night’s sleep with your partner.

Consider Buying a Split Mattress

If you and your partner need very different things from a mattress, a split mattress might help. You can share a bed while having a firmness and support level that’s different from your partner’s if you buy a split-firmness mattress. Split kings, for example, are actually two twin XL mattresses placed together on the same frame. They’re excellent options for adjustable bed frames and allow you to sleep with your partner without having to compromise on comfort.

Try the Scandinavian Method

If you fight over blankets, or one of you sleeps hot while the other is cold, you may want to try the Scandinavian sleep method. It boils down to using two single-sized duvets or comforters instead of sharing one. This allows each partner to use bedding that’s compatible with their own personal preferences.

Invest in Comfy Bedroom Accessories

Making your sleep environment as comfortable as possible can go a long way in ensuring a happy night’s sleep. Partners can make their side of the bed their own by choosing specific pillows and using a mattress topper or pad on their half of the bed. Earplugs, noise machines, and anti-snoring mouthguards are also worth considering for couples with a partner who snores.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best mattress for couples?

The best mattress for couples is one that supports each partner while providing enough cushioning to prevent pressure points from developing. All mattress types can be good fits for couples, but airbeds and split-firmness models offer the most versatility and allow couples to have separate firmness levels.

What is the best mattress firmness for couples?

The best mattress firmness for couples is one that’s supportive enough for both partners’ weights and preferred sleeping positions. Side sleepers typically prefer softer beds compared with back and stomach sleepers. And as a general rule of thumb, the more you weigh the firmer the mattress you need. If you and your partner find yourself on the opposite end of either of those spectrums, try compromising with a mid-range bed with a medium (5) or medium firm (6) feel.

Do mattresses have a weight limit?

Many mattresses are rated to support sleepers up to a certain weight, usually around 250 pounds per side. However, some manufacturers make mattresses designed for heavier people. When checking a mattress’ weight limit, you should also look at how much weight your bed frame can handle.

What mattress size is better for couples?

Generally, couples should sleep on full, queen, king, or California king mattresses, which are all designed for two people to use. Among standard bed sizes, full size mattresses can feel a bit tight, queen beds are pretty standard for two sleepers, king mattresses are the widest, and California kings are the longest. You’ll also want to consider a model that’s thick enough to support two people, so stick to beds that are 8 inches tall or more.

How often should you replace your mattress?

It’s not a strict rule, but you should generally replace your mattress every six to eight years. Most mattress components start to break down within this time frame and begin to lose support, which can cause discomfort or pain. Extra noise, sagging, and increases in allergies can all be signs that it’s time to upgrade to a new mattress.
