Brooklyn Bedding is a “mattress-in-a-box” mattress brand that went online in 2008. Since that time, the company has released a handful of individual mattress models, including the Signature, Aurora, Bloom Hybrid, Bowery Hybrid and Spartan. This review will profile the Brooklyn Bedding Signature mattress, which is a hybrid model.

The Signature is constructed with a quilted cover and a comfort layer of gel-infused TitanFlex polyfoam, which has a latex-like responsiveness. This is followed by a layer of firmer VariFlex polyfoam. The support core consists of 8-inch pocketed coils reinforced with a layer of base polyfoam. Altogether, this mattress measures 11.75 inches thick.

Brooklyn Bedding offers three firmness levels for the Signature, named Soft, Medium, and Firm. Each corresponds to a different number on our 1-10 firmness scale: medium soft (4), medium firm (6), and firm (8), respectively. Each feel offers a distinct combination of body-contouring and sleeper support, and most people should be able to find a firmness level that meets their needs. If none of these options will work for you, another Brooklyn Bedding mattress may be more suitable. These include the all-foam Bowery, as well as four additional hybrids: the Aurora Hybrid, Bloom Hybrid, Bowery Hybrid, and Spartan Hybrid.

Below, we’ll discuss the Brooklyn Bedding Signature’s construction details, prices, and performance ratings, as well as Brooklyn Bedding’s shipping, return, and warranty policies.

Side and back sleepers tend to feel most comfortable on mattresses with mid-level surface feels. According to Brooklyn Bedding, this firmness level is their best-seller.you’d rather sleep on a mattress that feels very supportive and offers minimal conforming. The foam layers maintain a very even plane, so you barely sink beneath the surface at all. People who weigh more than 230 pounds – back and stomach sleepers in particular – will likely find this firmness level more comfortable than the other two.

Side Sleepers

Many side sleepers prefer softer mattresses that cushion the shoulders and hips, promote even spinal alignment, and alleviate pressure points. In this respect, the medium soft Signature is ideal for side sleepers who weigh up to 230 pounds. Those who weigh more than 230 pounds may find this feel too soft and saggy.

Back Sleepers:

For back sleepers, a mid-level feel is typically most comfortable. This position often requires a balance of body-contouring and even support. The medium soft Signature conforms rather closely and may sink too much for back sleepers who weigh 130 pounds or more. For those who weigh less, the contouring feel will likely be very comfortable.

Stomach Sleepers:

Many stomach sleepers struggle with softer mattresses. This is because most of us carry a large portion of body weight in our midsection, and sleeping face-down can cause the body to sink too deeply. Stomach sleepers who weigh 130 pounds or more will probably find the medium soft Signature too saggy, but it should provide excellent support for those who weigh less than 130 pounds.

Side Sleepers

The balanced feel of a medium firm Signature is best suited to side sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds. They’ll experience some noticeable body-contouring and likely feel less pressure, but their bodies will remain on an even plane. Side sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds may find this model too firm, whereas it might feel too soft for those who weigh more than 230 pounds.

Back Sleepers

The medium firm Signature is well-equipped for back sleepers who weigh less than 230 pounds. They won’t sink too much beneath the midsection, hips, and other relatively heavy areas of the body, and this results in comfortable conforming and less overall pressure. Back sleepers who weigh 230 pounds or more will experience deeper sinking, but the mattress is still reasonably comfortable and supportive.

Stomach Sleepers:

The medium firm Signature does not conform or sink too much. Stomach sleepers should receive adequate support regardless of their body weight, but most will notice a bit of sagging around the waist and hips. However, it’s important to note that stomach sleeping is associated with more night-to-night aches and pains than the other two positions, regardless of which mattress you use.

Side Sleepers

The firm Signature barely contours at all, leaving minimal padding for a side sleeper’s shoulders and hips. Those who weigh more than 230 pounds may prefer this feel because it means stronger support and less sinking. However, side sleepers who weigh 230 pounds or less will probably not find the mattress as supportive.

Back Sleepers

If you sleep on your back and weigh at least 130 pounds, then the firm Signature will likely feel very comfortable and supportive. You’ll receive strong reinforcement for your entire body, including areas where more weight is concentrated. Back sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds may find this model too firm and feel a bit of added pressure as a result.

Stomach Sleepers

For most stomach sleepers who weigh 130 pounds or more, this firmness level will be the most comfortable of the three. You won’t experience the same sinking around the midsection and hips as you would on a medium soft or medium firm Signature. Stomach sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds may also prefer this feel, but for some, it will be too firm.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

6.5/10

Soft: 8 / 10

Medium: 8 / 10

Firm: 5.5 / 10

BROOKLYN_BEDDING_SIGNATURE_MOTIONISO

The Signature isolates motion fairly well. Many hybrid models feel more responsive on the surface, and this can generate more motion transfer when someone changes positions or gets in and out of bed.

The Signature’s thick foam layers absorb movement to eliminate a great deal of transfer. You may still notice some ripples of transfer across the surface on the medium soft and medium firm models. For the firm Signature, the transfer will be more noticeable.

If you tend to wake up when your sleep partner moves in bed, we recommend the medium soft or medium firm models. The firm Signature may be suitable if you’re a sound sleeper, or if you prefer a more responsive bed.

Pressure Relief

7/10

BROOKLYN_BEDDING_SIGNATURE_PRESSURE_SIDE

The Signature offers very good pressure relief in all three firmness levels. However, the most comfortable feel for you will probably depend on your sleep position and body type.

The medium soft model conforms very closely. This feel should alleviate pressure if you sleep on your side. The foam layers provide good cushioning for the shoulders and hips, which can improve your spinal alignment and reduce pressure throughout the body.

The medium firm feel provides better relief for side and back sleepers who weigh up to 230 pounds. You won’t sink too much but the foam still conforms to the body, resulting in less pressure for the shoulders, lower back, and spine.

If you weigh more than 230 pounds and/or sleep on your stomach, then the firm feel will probably alleviate the most pressure. This feel conforms very little and feels exceptionally supportive, so you don’t need to worry about the aches and pains associated with saggy, uneven mattresses.

Temperature Control

7.5/10

Soft: 6.5 / 10

Medium: 8 / 10

Firm: 8 / 10

BROOKLYN_BEDDING_SIGNATURE_HEATCAM

All three versions of the Signature sleep reasonably cool thanks to their coil systems, which promote steady airflow to help the mattress maintain a comfortable temperature. The TitanFlex surface foam is also fairly breathable compared to materials found in other hybrids, such as memory foam.

The firm feel should provide the best temperature regulation. This is because you’ll sink very little into this mattress and enjoy more surface airflow as a result. The medium soft and medium firm models conform more closely. If you’re an exceptionally hot sleeper, you may feel a bit too warm on these models as the foam contours to your body – but for most, the mattress should sleep cool and comfortable regardless of the selected firmness.

Edge Support

7.5/10

Soft: 6.5 / 10

Medium: 6.5 / 10

Firm: 8 / 10

Hybrids generally excel at edge support, and the Signature is no exception. Coil support cores reinforce the perimeter better than latex or foam. This means less sinkage when you get on and off the mattress, and more stability if you like sleeping near the edges.

The firm Signature offers the strongest perimeter support among the three available firmness levels. The comfort layer conforms minimally to ensure very little sinkage when you sit or lie near the edges. The medium soft and medium firm models sink more because the foam conforms more closely, but they still maintain good overall stability if you weigh 230 pounds or less. If you weigh more, expect more sinkage when getting in and out of bed.

Ease of Movement

6.5/10

Soft: 6.5 / 10

Medium: 8 / 10

Firm: 9.5 / 10

Polyfoam is a fairly responsive material, but the latex-like TitanFlex foam used in the Signature is exceptionally bouncy. This allows you and your partner to move across the mattress rather easily. You won’t sink into the bed as you might on a mattress with memory foam.

That said, the medium soft Signature is a little more difficult when it comes to moving across the surface. This model conforms the closest, so you’ll feel more sinkage when moving between the edges and the interior of the mattress. The medium firm and firm models provide more bounce-back.

Off-Gassing

7/10

The Signature will produce some light off-gassing odor when you remove the mattress from its shipping box. Off-gassing, which refers to the release of tiny particles known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), is common for mattresses with foam layers. VOCs carry a distinct chemical smell that many find unpleasant. Thankfully, the Signature’s off-gassing odors should dissipate in a matter of days. This is primarily due to its coil system, which promotes airflow to rid the mattress of bothersome smells.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress Review Breakdown

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature is a hybrid mattress. “Hybrid” refers to coil mattresses that have thicker comfort and transitional layers, allowing you to experience deeper conforming and more pressure relief than you would on a traditional innerspring.

The Signature has a cotton cover quilted with polyfoam to give the surface a bit of extra padding. The bed’s comfort layer consists of gel-infused TitanFlex polyfoam, which has a highly responsive feel similar to latex. The comfort layer is reinforced with VariFlex polyfoam. This transitional layer feels firmer and denser than the comfort layer, and prevents you from sinking too deeply into the mattress. The thickness of each layer varies depending on the firmness of the model.

Like most hybrids, the Signature contains pocketed coils in its support core. The coils, which measure 8 inches thick, stabilize the mattress very well to provide even support for your body and prevent deep sinkage along the edges when you get on and off the bed. A .25 inch of high-density polyfoam is located beneath the coils for added reinforcement.

You can choose a medium soft, medium firm, or firm feel for your Signature. The firmness level that feels most comfortable will depend on your ideal combination of body-contouring and support. The soft feel conforms very closely, the firm feel barely conforms at all, and the medium firm feel contours a bit while remaining very supportive.

Measuring 11.75 inches thick, the Signature is considered a medium-profile mattress.
