Side Sleepers

The Saatva HD is a good option for side sleepers who weigh over 130 pounds and especially those who weigh closer to and over 230 pounds. For people under 130 pounds, its firm feel and light cradling are insufficient to cushion pressure points at the shoulders and hips. But for people with a higher weight, the ability of the Saatva HD and its zoned construction to compress near pressure points without pronounced sinking or sagging makes it a comfortable and supportive option.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers typically need a firmer mattress with only light or moderate contouring that can keep their spine aligned and avoid excess bending around the lumbar spine. The Saatva HD fits this bill, making it an excellent option for back sleepers who weigh over 130 pounds. People over 230 pounds often find that other mattresses allow their abdomen to sink too deeply into the mattress, but the reinforced design of the Saatva HD helps prevent that from happening. It should be noted, though, that these benefits for back sleepers over 130 pounds make the Saatva HD a worse fit for back sleepers under that weight, as they generally find it to be a bit too hard to cushion their body appropriately.

Stomach Sleepers

Like back sleepers, stomach sleepers typically get great results on the Saatva HD if they weigh over 130 pounds. The mattress is plenty firm to make sure they don’t feel as though they are being swallowed by the mattress. The zoned reinforcements in the innerspring coils and latex bolster the bed around the lumbar spine where stomach sleepers are most at risk of spinal misalignment. For people under 130 pounds, though, this mattress may feel a bit too firm and inflexible.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

7.5/10

Motion isolation on the Saatva HD is only around average. The high levels of firmness and bounce provided by the Saatva HD reduce its ability to concretely isolate motion.

Though certain design elements, such as offset coils and a memory foam layer, cut down on motion transfer, that effect is counteracted by the responsive latex and coils. In addition, the cotton in the pillowtop does little to prevent motion transfer.

Overall, the Saatva HD provides enough motion isolation to avoid nighttime disruptions for many couples, but it performs worse in this area than many hybrid mattresses, especially those that have a more significant amount of memory foam in their comfort system.

Pressure Relief

7/10

The Saatva HD provides average to above-average pressure relief to most sleepers.

Each layer of the mattress contributes to pressure relief. Talalay latex has mild contouring and compression to cushion pressure points, especially with its zoned formulation. Memory foam has more pronounced conforming that steps up pressure relief while the polyfoam and zoned coils underneath ensure that sleepers won’t sink too far into the bed. The cotton in the pillow-top has minimal contouring, but it can offer a softer feel at sharp impact areas.

While the materials in the comfort system might be insufficient for pressure relief in some sleepers, they tend to perform better for people over 300 pounds. Some side sleepers, especially if they are under 230 pounds, may find that the firm feel is a bit too hard to accommodate their shoulders and hips.

Temperature Control

8.5/10

The Saatva HD excels in preventing sleeping hot. Its effective temperature regulation starts with the top two layers of cotton and latex. Cotton is naturally breathable, helping to wick moisture away from the body for comfort cooling. Latex retains minimal heat, combining with the cotton to keep the surface cool.

While memory foam and polyfoam can heat up more than latex, the airflow through the coils helps ventilate any collected heat in those layers. Because the Saatva HD has a firmer feel with only moderate contouring, the body doesn’t sink in as deeply, which means there’s more cooling airflow around the skin.

All of these elements allow the Saatva HD to provide a better option for hot sleepers, especially those who have a higher body weight.

Edge Support

8.5/10

Multiple components contribute to the above-average edge support on the Saatva HD.

The extra-strong coils with a high-density polyfoam encasement create a sturdy base that doesn’t give out around the perimeter. Because of its responsiveness and firmness, the latex layer in the comfort system holds up well around the edges, offering more structural integrity to the mattress as a whole.

The firm comfort level means less sink on-the-whole, including around the edge, which can be an issue on other hybrid mattresses with more foam layers and/or a softer feel.

All that said, like on most mattresses, customers will notice more compression around the perimeter of the Saatva HD than at the center of the mattress. Nevertheless, it should offer plenty of stability for sleeping or sitting on the edge.

Ease of Movement

7.5/10

The notable bounce on the Saatva HD makes ease of movement a plus for this mattress.

Talalay latex is quite responsive, and that feel is complemented by the bounce provided by the offset innerspring coils. The cotton in the pillow-top adds softness but with minimal impeding of movement, and the more modest contouring of the bed prevents feeling stuck in the mattress.

Compared to hybrids with deep contouring and/or comfort systems designed around memory foam, the Saatva HD permits much easier movement. This feature is especially important to anyone who moves often at night, including combination sleepers.

Off-Gassing

9.5/10

There is little-to-no off-gassing from the Saatva HD. Its design includes only a few foam layers, which are the most common culprits of off-gassing.

In addition, Saatva provides free White Glove delivery to set up the mattress, avoiding mattress in a box shipping that can increase off-gassing by sealing the mattress for an extended period in plastic packaging.

For these reasons, the Saatva HD off-gasses less than many other hybrids and certainly less than all-foam beds. Customers may still note a light “new mattress smell” that lasts for the first few hours after it is installed.

Saatva HD Mattress Review Breakdown

Numerous aspects of the design of the Saatva HD demonstrate how Saatva worked to build this mattress to suit the needs of sleepers over 300 pounds. That starts with its hybrid design that employs an assortment of materials to generate a robust yet comfortable bed.

As a hybrid, its support core is made with innerspring coils. These are extra-thick (12.5 gauge) offset coils that are zoned to give further reinforcements in key areas. Offset coils have more ability than traditional innerspring coils to reduce motion transfer. An encasement made of dense polyfoam goes around the sides and bottom of the coils to offer extra stability and edge support.

The comfort system has four elements. It starts with organic cotton that is quilted into a pillow top, providing softness and breathability. Next is bouncy and durable Talalay latex with moderate contouring and a zoned design for pressure point relief. Layers of memory foam and polyfoam supplement the contouring and contribute a touch of motion isolation.

Another important design element for sleepers over 300 pounds is the Saatva HD’s firmness, which rates as firm, or around a 7 on the typical firmness scale. This firmer feel hedges against excess sinking into the bed, which can be an issue on other mattresses.

The cover and pillow-top both use organic cotton, a naturally moisture-wicking material that, along with latex, fights heat buildup in the mattress.

Saatva encourages customers to purchase a specific foundation, sold separately, to accompany the Saatva HD. This foundation is made with heavy-duty wood slats and is available in either a 4.75-inch or 8.75-inch height. While the Saatva HD can be used with other types of frames, Saatva recommends their frame for optimal durability.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

The Saatva HD is more expensive than most other hybrid mattresses. Its added cost reflects its thicker overall profile, its inclusion of many distinct layers, and its use of stronger, reinforced materials at multiple levels of the mattress. The higher price also includes the White Glove delivery as part of the purchase price.

While the price tag of the Saatva HD is higher than many other hybrids, its potential for enhanced performance and durability for sleepers over 300 pounds can justify the extra cost.

Shoppers should also keep in mind that the foundation recommended by Saatva for this mattress has an additional cost of $190. Because it is sold separately, it is not included in the prices listed in the following table.
