WinkBeds is an American mattress company founded in 2015. Based in Wisconsin, the company produces mattresses and other sleep accessories sourced from domestic materials. Aside from the EcoCloud mattress, WinkBeds currently sells the flagship WinkBed hybrid and the all-foam GravityLux, which we will discuss in other articles on our website.

Sourced from sustainable materials, the WinkBeds EcoCloud is constructed with Talalay latex, pocketed coils, and an organic cotton and wool cover. It has a medium firmness level, or 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, and measures 12.5 inches tall in total.

We’ll cover everything you need to know about the EcoCloud’s construction, materials, and how these affect the sleeping experience. Our full WinkBeds EcoCloud mattress review also goes over practical information and user reviews to help you make an informed decision about your mattress purchase.

Side Sleepers

Due to its slightly plusher surface, the WinkBeds EcoCloud earns excellent ratings from most side sleepers under 230 pounds.

Side sleepers commonly experience pressure points in the hips and shoulders as a result of these heavier body areas digging into the mattress. The latex forms a loose cradle that alleviates these pressure points, while the zoned pocketed coils help promote spinal alignment by pushing back more in the lumbar area.

Side sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds should also find the mattress comfortable, with the coils providing the extra targeted support needed for heavier individuals. That said, the mattress’s medium feel may allow a little too much sink for some, which can impede proper spinal alignment.

Back Sleepers

The EcoCloud is suitable for back sleepers in all weight categories, especially those who weigh less than 130 pounds.

Back sleepers require a mattress that provides an even balance of support and pressure relief. The EcoCloud’s medium firmness and balanced feel are best suited to sleepers under 130 pounds as this group doesn’t put as much pressure on the mattress. The zoned coils help support the ever-important lumbar area and prevent sagging in the hips, promoting proper spinal alignment.

Most people find that hybrid mattresses provide more robust support for heavier individuals, and this is true of the EcoCloud as well. Those who weigh more than 130 pounds should sleep fairly comfortably, although they may experience slight sinkage in the hips due to the softer latex.

Stomach Sleepers

The EcoCloud is least suited to stomach sleepers, who generally find that a firmer surface does better at keeping the spine aligned.

The mattress keeps sleepers “on” and not “in” the mattress, and is sufficiently firm to promote decent spinal alignment in many stomach sleepers under 230 pounds. However, stomach sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds may experience sagging under the hips, which can contribute to back and neck pain.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

8/10

The WinkBeds EcoCloud has a highly responsive surface that does not absorb motion to the extent of an all-foam mattress.

As with most hybrids, individually wrapping the coils goes some way toward preventing motion transfer. The coils are able to respond locally to motion instead of being interconnected as with traditional innersprings.

However, between the springy latex and the bounce of the pocketed coils, most couples will feel movement from their partner to a certain extent when switching sleeping positions or getting in and out of bed. This is typical of latex hybrids.

Sensitive sleepers who sleep with a partner may want to investigate getting another type of mattress, such as an all-foam mattress.

Pressure Relief

8.5/10

Most people experience above-average pressure relief from the WinkBeds EcoCloud. This is unsurprising given the mattress’s “medium” firmness level.

Despite not hugging the body like memory foam, the Talalay latex is soft enough to cushion pressure points in most sleepers. The zoned coils help provide a deep cradle for heavier body parts that usually dig into the mattress, like the hips and shoulders.

The relatively plush surface makes the mattress suitable for side and back sleepers across all weight categories. Conversely, stomach sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds may experience pressure build-up in the hips.

Temperature Control

9.5/10

The EcoCloud is made of breathable materials that keep the mattress cool throughout the night.

The cotton and wool layer wicks moisture away from the sleeper, which then dissipates through the aerated, open-cell Talalay latex. In the support core, pocketed coils leave ample room for airflow to prevent any residual heat retention.

Since sleepers mostly sleep “on” and not “in” this mattress, body heat is unlikely to get trapped around the sleeper’s body. Like many latex hybrids, the EcoCloud is a very good choice for people who tend to sleep hot.

Edge Support

9/10

Reinforced coils around the perimeter of the mattress lend strong edge support to the WinkBeds EcoCloud. This is good news for people who rely on the edges to get in and out of bed, or who spend a lot of time sitting on the edge of the bed. Strong edges are also helpful for people who share the bed as they allow each person to sleep right up next to the edge without feelings of roll-off.

Ease of Movement

9.5/10

Combination sleepers should have no trouble switching sleeping positions on the WinkBeds EcoCloud. The latex keeps sleepers on top of the bed and the coils provide some kickback. Together, these two elements result in a responsive surface that barely inhibits movement at all.

Off-Gassing

9.5/10

As a latex hybrid with minimal no unnatural foams, the EcoCloud emits minimal off-gassing odors.

Upon unboxing the mattress some people may notice a faint rubbery smell from the latex. This odor is considered perfectly harmless and should disappear in no time, especially since the coils allow room for airflow.

Off-gassing is the result of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions that are released when foam or latex comes into contact with the air.

EcoCloud Mattress Review Breakdown

At 12.5 inches tall, the WinkBeds EcoCloud has ample room for a cushioning comfort section as well as a sturdy base. Since its profile is slightly taller than the average mattress, it will require deep-pocket sheets.

A soft organic cotton and New Zealand wool cover helps wick moisture away from the sleeper and keep the surface of the mattress cool. The WinkBeds EcoCloud holds OEKO-TEX and Rainforest Alliance certifications, and the cotton is certified by the Global Organic Textiles Standard.

Measuring 4 inches in total, the comfort section of the EcoCloud is divided into two layers. Both are made of Talalay latex, which is known for its buoyant and springy feel. The latex distributes body weight to alleviate pressure build-up. Talalay latex is open-cell and naturally breathable, and the latex used in the EcoCloud has pincore holes to help boost airflow.

The 8-inch pocketed coil support core is made of individually wrapped coils. These are made of thrice-tempered recycled steel and move independently of each other to reduce motion transfer.

The coils are divided into 5 zones, with 15-gauge coils in the head and feet areas and 14.5-gauge coils in the center third. This provides firmer support under the lower back and more pressure relief in the hips and shoulders. The perimeter is also reinforced with a double layer of 16-gauge coils to prevent sagging when sitting on the edge of the bed. A thin layer of cotton provides a stable base for the coils.

The mattress has a firmness level of medium, or a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This is within the range preferred by the vast majority of sleepers, albeit on the lower end. The mattress provides a balance of plushness and firmness that gently cradles sleepers while supporting areas like the lower back. It’s quite bouncy and keeps most sleepers on top of the mattress instead of sinking into it.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

The WinkBeds EcoCloud is a bit more expensive than the typical hybrid, but it has an average price-point for a natural latex hybrid mattress. Natural latex is more costly to produce than memory foam, but the latex hybrid construction promises above-average durability which helps justify the price.

WinkBeds has been known to offer sales in the range of a few hundred dollars, so this is something to watch for throughout the year.

The warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship that arise under normal wear, including degradation, splits, cracks, and visible indentations deeper than 1.5 inches, unless the mattress has been used with insufficient support or has been improperly handled.

Warranty coverage does not extend to mattresses that have been misused or neglected, or which have been subjected to an accident or used in violation of instructions. Nor does the warranty cover normal increases in softness, comfort preferences, or defects caused by abuse or damage such as burns, cuts, or stains.
