While most WinkBeds mattresses are sold both online and in stores, the WinkBeds Blue Series 1 Mattress is one of two new WinkBeds available exclusively through brick-and-mortar retailers. This latex hybrid model has a soft (3) feel and a high profile, measuring 15 inches thick. Its counterpart, the Series 2, is 17 inches tall and has a medium firm (7) feel.

The Blue Series follows on the heels of the classic hybrid WinkBed Mattress and all-foam WinkBeds GravityLux Mattress, both of which come in several firmness levels, from medium soft (4) to firm (8), to suit different body types and sleeping positions.

The WinkBed Blue Series 1 holds the distinction of being the softest model by the brand. We’ll share how it performed in our in-house tests, which of our testers found it most comfortable, and what you should know about the purchasing process.

Testing Team Takeaways

To test the WinkBed Blue Series 1 Mattress, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.

I’ve been testing the classic WinkBed lately, so sleeping on the Winkbed Blue Series 1 was an upgrade in so many ways. It felt softer than the classic WinkBed, while still keeping much of that supportive feel. As an active person who is usually sore, I tend to go for something a little softer, so the Blue Series 1 was an excellent match. The Blue Series 1 is a well-made latex hybrid, so it was very breathable and I didn’t feel any heat buildup. As a really hot sleeper, I could easily see myself sleeping on this bed year-round.

This is an upgraded — and updated — take on the classic WinkBed. The surface feels plush yet supportive, and the latex layers give this a bouncier feel. As I laid on the bed, my shoulders and hips felt cushioned by the surface, but I could move around with ease and my 210 pound frame was kept in an even, proper alignment.

The interesting aspects of the Blue Series 1 are the latex and Serene foam combo. Latex lends to its responsive nature and pushback support while the Serene foam provides the initial impact absorption. Those materials combined with the reinforced-edge pocket coils mean it’s pressure relieving without being sink-in, has a bounce and response that still dampens movement, a strong edge, and should be a cooler sleep than a standard foam hybrid. My main takeaway is that this is a premium model that will wow a shopper in a showroom setting — you’ll appreciate its luxury nature.

Side Sleepers

Because of its soft (3) feel, the WinkBed Blue Series 1 earned its highest marks from our side-sleeping team members. With 2 inches of Talalay latex and 2 inches of foam in the comfort layers, our testers’ hips and shoulders sank in enough to limit pressure buildup. The pocketed coil core prevented these critical regions from sagging too deeply and putting our testers’ spines out of alignment.

Our testers under 130 pounds reported a nearly ideal combination of cradling and support.  Those over 130 pounds felt comfortable but some preferred a slightly sturdier surface.

Back Sleepers

Most of our back-sleeping testers found the Blue Series 1 quite comfortable. The Talalay latex spreads compression over a relatively wide area, gently molding to our testers’ lower backs while providing ample support to promote good sleep posture.

As a soft (3) mattress, the WinkBed Blue Series 1 is more cush than we typically recommend for back sleepers, but its balanced feel appealed to nearly all of our back-sleeping testers under 230 pounds. Some over 230 pounds felt that their hips sank in more deeply than was ideal, but no one reported experiencing lower back discomfort.

Stomach Sleepers

While soft mattresses rarely accommodate stomach sleepers, our testing team found that this bed worked well for many of our face-down sleepers. The top layer uses Talalay latex, which distributes weight across a wide area rather than exclusively under the sleeper’s body. This can help limit the midsection sinkage that often makes softer mattresses uncomfortable for stomach sleepers.

Testers under 130 pounds noted that the surface felt plush yet supportive. Those between 130 and 230 pounds enjoyed the feel but thought a firmer bed would keep their spines more level. Most of our testers over 230 pounds noticed a bit more sagging around their midsections, making it difficult to maintain good sleep posture.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

8/10

Latex and hybrid mattresses are notoriously bouncy, but the plushness of the WinkBed Blue Series 1 combined with its foam layer help absorb movement substantially. — Jackson

The WinkBed Blue Series 1 Mattress’ motion isolation is similar to what we’d expect from most soft latex hybrid models. While the buoyancy of latex and the springy coil core contribute to some motion transfer, the plush polyfoam layer significantly restricts it.

Our tests detected mild vibrations across the bed’s surface, and team members also reported feeling some motion when a testing partner moved around on the other side. Some sleepers who awaken easily and share their bed with a restless partner may notice vibrations, but most sleepers won’t.

Pressure Relief

9/10

The Blue Series 1’s ability to relieve pressure in my shoulders and hips is crucial as a side sleeper. The thick comfort system cushions my pressure points but the springs keep me from sinking in too deep. — Tom

Pressure relief is one of the WinkBed Blue Series 1’s defining characteristics. A 2-inch layer of latex and a 2-inch layer of polyfoam provide generous conforming to redistribute the sleeper’s weight and ease pressure. The pocketed coil system adds to this by allowing each spring to compress individually for more precise conforming.

Across the board, our testers reported experiencing strong pressure relief. Our pressure mapping showed that the mattress spread out the force of the tester’s weight particularly well for side sleepers under 130 pounds.

Temperature Control

9/10

I’m usually a little wary of softer beds because they’re often made of heat-trapping, cushy foams, but the Blue Series 1 was nothing of the sort. I sank in a bit, but the latex was breathable and didn’t really hug my body. The coils were strong like on the classic WinkBed and I slept comfortably through the night. – Danny

Latex hybrids tend to earn high marks in this category due to the breathability of latex and coils, but soft models can trap heat by hugging the body.

However, the WinkBed Blue Series 1’s cover contains gel engineered to wick away heat, the latex layer lets air circulate, and a copper infusion is designed to further transfer heat away from the sleeper. Airflow through the coil system also helps dissipate heat.

Our temperature readings showed minimal warmth lingering on the surface after removing a heat source, and our testers prone to sleeping hot said they remained at a neutral temperature.

Edge Support

9/10

The latex and Serene foam combo, paired with the reinforced-edge pocket coils, make for a strong edge that’s both responsive and provides just enough pushback. – Jackson

Like many latex hybrid models, the WinkBed Blue Series 1 Mattress includes a coil core with a reinforced perimeter. This gives the edge a sturdier feel than we normally find in softer models.

While team members over 230 pounds experienced more compression, everyone felt relatively stable along the perimeter. This could give couples more surface area and make it easier for those with mobility issues to get in and out of bed.

Ease of Movement

9/10

Soft beds are not usually easy to move around on, but the responsiveness of the latex and coils gives the body some extra support in this area. — Tom

Thanks to its responsive latex hybrid design, the WinkBed Blue Series 1 is easier to move on than the average soft (3) model. While the Talalay latex contours to the sleeper’s body, it regains its shape quickly so that it’s easier to change positions. The coil core also adds bounce to facilitate movement.

All of our team members reported that the Blue Series 1 did not impede their movement. It may be a good option for sleepers with mobility issues who want a softer sleep surface.

Off-Gassing

9.5/10

Although there’s some foam in this bed, it didn’t smell too strong when we unboxed it. It’s practically impossible to have no odor when you unpack a bed, but the Blue Series 1 was better than a lot of others I’ve smelled by far. The bed’s got a seriously tall set of coils in the core too, so that helped any odor that was there disappear pretty quick. – Danny

Our team detected a very minimal odor when unboxing the WinkBed Blue Series 1 Mattress and reported that it dissipated almost entirely within 24 hours.

Any model with synthetic foam may have an initial odor due to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) lingering in the mattress after manufacturing. While the WinkBed Blue Series 1 contains some material that could contribute to off-gassing odors, air circulating through the coil core helps any smells go away quickly.

If you’re sensitive to odors, leaving the mattress in a well-ventilated room for a day should do the trick.

WinkBed Blue Series 1 Mattress Review Breakdown

The WinkBed Blue Series 1 Mattress is a soft (3) latex hybrid that measures 15 inches thick, making it a high-profile model that may require deeper-pocketed sheets. Its construction incorporates the best elements of both latex mattresses and hybrid mattresses.

A quilted cover tops the mattress. The cover is infused with gel that’s designed to transfer heat away from the body for a cooler sleep. Next, the top comfort layer is made up of 2 inches of Talalay latex with a copper infusion. The latex contours to the body to ease pressure, but the material also feels airy and buoyant for easier movement. Copper is also popular for its purported cooling and antimicrobial properties.

A second comfort layer consisting of 2 inches of polyfoam enhances the cradling while softening the transition between the plush comfort system and the firmer coil core.

The mattress core contains 10-inch pocketed coils, which move separately from each other to limit the spread of motion and provide more precise contouring. A reinforced perimeter adds support right up to the edge. A polyfoam layer at the base improves the mattress’ structural stability and gives the coils something to press against.
