In 2019 Brooklyn Bedding released the Titan Firm Hybrid, an ultra-supportive mattress specifically designed for people who weigh more than 230 pounds. Released in 2021, the Titan Plus Luxe — previously known as the Titan Luxe Hybrid — builds on its predecessor’s design with a thicker profile and softer feel. This mattress is medium firm (6), making it more approachable for people in the range of 130 to 230 pounds without sacrificing the support needed for heavier individuals.

The Titan Plus Luxe begins with gel-infused memory foam quilted into the cover. This is followed by a comfort layer of latex-like TitanFlex polyfoam that both contours to the body and feels fairly responsive. The support core contains 8-inch pocketed coils and a base layer of high-density polyfoam, resulting in excellent overall stability.

As with the original Titan, Titan Plus Luxe buyers can opt for a standard cover or a cooling cover infused with phase change material. This addition might be useful for exceptionally hot sleepers, though even without the specialty cover this mattress fares well when it comes to temperature control. The thick coil system protects the edges against excessive sinkage and makes it easy for most people to move across the surface.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers usually need mattresses with plenty of cushioning. This position is not conducive to even alignment, so a mattress should contour to the shoulders and hips in order to keep them in line with the spine.

Side sleepers who weigh 230 pounds or less may experience pressure in sensitive areas when lying on the Plus Luxe. The bed’s medium firm feel creates moderate contouring, which may not be sufficient for these individuals.

On the other hand, side sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds should be very comfortable on this mattress due to its mid-level firmness. These sleepers are more susceptible to deep sinkage, so a strong support system can help keep their bodies on an even plane.

Back Sleepers

The Plus Luxe is highly suitable for back sleepers in the range of 130 to 230 pounds. Back sleeping promotes even spinal alignment, but this position typically demands more support to prevent uncomfortable sinkage around the torso and hips. Since the mattress is fairly firm but not too firm, back sleepers in this weight group should be able to rest comfortably and receive some contouring without dipping too much.

Back sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds may also find the Plus Luxe suitable, though there is a higher likelihood of the mattress feeling too firm. As a result, the foams might not conform closely enough to alleviate pressure. Conversely, those who sleep on their backs and weigh more than 230 pounds may find the mattress too soft. Even at medium firm, the Plus Luxe may not provide enough reinforcement to keep these back sleepers fully supported.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleeping is typically associated with more aches and pains than other positions, because sleeping face-down can cause the entire body to sink too much. However, with its medium firm feel and robust coils, the Plus Luxe provides an adequate balance of support and contouring for most stomach sleepers.

Stomach sleepers who weigh less than 230 pounds receive more than enough support and should feel reasonably comfortable, though the Plus Luxe may feel too firm for some. Those who weigh more than 230 pounds are more likely to sink excessively and feel aches and pains in the shoulders, lower back, and hips. A firmer mattress, such as the flagship Titan, may be better suited to stomach sleepers in this weight group.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

7/10

Consistent with other hybrid models, motion isolation is neither a major weakness or chief strength of the Plus Luxe.

The conforming foams in the Titan Plus Luxe absorb some movement when someone changes positions or gets in and out of bed. This minimizes the amount of motion that transfers across the surface, which can be a common source of sleep disruptions for people who share their mattress.

At the same time, the TitanFlex foam has a responsive quality that can be likened to latex, and the coils also generate some springiness on the surface. So while the mattress isolates some movement, you and your partner may notice some motion transfer every now and then.

Pressure Relief

8/10

The memory foam quilted into the Plus Luxe’s cover provides even contouring and weight distribution, and the TitanFlex polyfoam also has some adaptive qualities. Materials that cradle the spine can take pressure off the shoulders, lower back, and hips, alleviating discomfort in these potentially sensitive areas.

The mid-level feel and moderate contouring should provide consistent pressure relief for side sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds, and back and stomach sleepers who weigh 130 to 230 pounds.

However, this medium firm mattress may feel a bit too stiff for some. This is particularly true for side sleepers who weigh 230 pounds or less. Back and stomach sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds may find the Plus Luxe too soft and sink to an uncomfortable degree, as these individuals generally need a firm feel from their mattress.

Temperature Control

7/10

Hybrids generally provide above-average temperature control, and the Plus Luxe is no exception. This can largely be attributed to the bed’s open coil system, which generates steady airflow throughout the interior to maintain a cool, comfortable temperature for sleeping.

Though it costs extra, the cooling cover can be a real asset for hot sleepers. Phase change material is engineered to absorb and dissipate body heat until the surface feels quite cool. Sleepers who run exceptionally hot in bed or those who live in warm or humid climates should consider this optional add-on.

That said, the standard cover sleeps reasonably cool and is likely sufficient for people who don’t tend to overheat while they sleep.

Edge Support

7.5/10

The Plus Luxe offers reliable edge support, which is a common characteristic of coil mattresses. The bed’s 8-inch pocketed coils are relatively thick and feature added reinforcement around the perimeter, ensuring minimal sinkage and noticeable push-back when you sleep near or sit along the edges of the mattress.

The strong edge support makes the hybrid a good option for people who weigh more than 230 pounds, as well as those with mobility issues who have difficulty getting off of their mattress.

The Plus Luxe’s sturdy edges are also helpful for couples. Mattresses with weak edge support often feel less stable along the perimeter, confining co-sleepers to the middle of the bed. With this mattress, couples should have no issue utilizing the entire sleep surface.

Ease of Movement

6.5/10

Deep sinkage should not be a problem for most people with the Plus Luxe. The surface has a medium firm feel, and both the TitanFlex foam and pocketed coils respond quickly to your movements to keep you on an even plane.

These features result in easier, less awkward movements on the surface when you change sleep positions or get in and out of bed. Some people who weigh more than 230 pounds may sink more, but most sleepers should be able to move without major restrictions.

Off-Gassing

7/10

After unboxing the Titan Plus Luxe, you’ll probably notice some initial odor from the foam layers. This is known as off-gassing, and it occurs when foams and other materials release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. VOCs are relatively harmless but they carry a noticeable chemical odor that many liken to plastic. At first, these smells can be somewhat overwhelming.

Thankfully, you won’t need to worry about off-gassing odors for long. The smells should completely clear out in a matter of days, leaving the bed fresh and suitable for sleeping. Hybrids generally present less of an issue with off-gassing because the coil layers help flush out unwanted aromas. To expedite the process, you can place the mattress in a well-ventilated room for a day or two before sleeping on it.

Titan Plus Luxe Mattress Review Breakdown

The Titan Plus Luxe is considered a mixed-foam hybrid mattress. The hybrid is a type of coil mattress characterized by thick comfort layers and a pocketed coil support core.

In the Plus Luxe, a 1-inch layer of quilted memory foam creates an initially plush feel when people climb into bed. This layer features gel infusions designed to draw heat away from the sleeper’s body.

The main comfort layer is composed of 2 inches of TitanFlex, a proprietary material designed to combine the adaptability of polyfoam with the responsiveness of latex. This mattress has a medium firm (6) feel, so owners should expect moderate conforming and above-average support. A 1-inch transitional layer of denser Energex polyfoam reinforces the comfort layer and prevents sleepers from sinking too deeply.

The support core is an 8-inch pocketed coil system over a layer of high-density polyfoam. Compared to the original Titan, these coils are 2 inches thicker and engineered to provide above-average support, even if the Plus Luxe is softer than its predecessor.

For the cover, customers have two options: standard or cooling, both made of polyester. The cooling cover is infused with phase change material, designed to dissipate heat away from the surface to maintain a more comfortable sleep temperature. The cooling cover costs extra, but the surcharge is reasonable compared to the Plus Luxe’s overall sticker price.

The mattress measures 13 inches thick, making it a high-profile model that stands 2 inches higher than the flagship Titan. Due to the combination of deep foam layers and thick coils, the Plus Luxe provides a good balance of body-conforming and sturdy support. The cooling cover does not add any thickness to the profile whatsoever.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

The Titan Plus Luxe is fairly affordable compared to other hybrid mattresses. On average, hybrids cost between $1,600 and $2,200 in a queen size. The Plus Luxe is only slightly more expensive than the original Titan, which is also considered inexpensive for a hybrid.

Adding the cooling cover comes at a surcharge, which varies according to the mattress size.

The mattress is available in seven different sizes. These include the six standard sizes, as well as a split California king size for couples who share adjustable beds. To purchase the split California king in full, customers must order two separate mattresses.
