Sealy is one of the most well-known names in the mattress world. Headquartered in North Carolina, Sealy has been manufacturing mattresses since 1881. In 2012, Sealy was acquired by Tempur-Pedic, and now both companies operate under the Tempur Sealy International name.

Sealy sells a number of different mattresses, including the Posturepedic Hybrid, the company’s most popular model, which is available in two firmness levels. Sealy also offers the Posturepedic Plus and the Sealy FlexGrid, both available in hybrid and foam models, as well as the Cocoon Chill and Cocoon Chill Hybrid, two models engineered to keep sleepers cool.

We’ll discuss the original Posturepedic Hybrid Mattress, examining how it performed in areas like temperature control and pressure relief. We’ll also provide detailed information on the mattress’ price and Sealy’s policies to help you decide if this is the right mattress for you.

  • Choose Soft if…you’re a side sleeper who weighs under 230 pounds or if you value pressure relief or motion isolation above all else.
  • Choose Firm if…you’re a stomach or back sleeper over 130 pounds and prefer a responsive mattress that keeps you cool.

Side Sleepers

The soft version of the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid Mattress is a great choice for side sleepers who weigh under 230 pounds. Our testers under 130 pounds found it especially comfortable. Side sleepers within this weight group tend to prefer a mattress with deep cushioning to ease pressure. The comfort system’s memory foam contours to the body to alleviate discomfort in the hips and shoulder, two of the areas that can cause side sleepers the most trouble.

However, shoppers should note that the soft model is very plush and may compress too deeply for people who weigh more than 230 pounds. Side sleepers above 230 pounds should opt for the firm model, which offers stronger support.

Back Sleepers

Overall, the back sleepers on our team enjoyed the firm model’s blend of cushioning and support. The soft model worked better for back sleepers under 130 pounds, while the firm was a better fit for those over 130 pounds.

The best mattress for back sleepers is one that cushions the lower back while keeping the spine evenly supported. We found that the firm version of the Posturepedic Hybrid achieved this balance best, particularly for those over 130 pounds. Its memory foam absorbs impact, while the pocketed coils within the support core provide the structure necessary to prevent the back from curving uncomfortably.

Stomach Sleepers

The firm model of the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid Mattress is a top-notch pick for stomach sleepers, especially those over 130 pounds. Stomach sleepers require strong support to keep their spine correctly positioned while they sleep. When stomach sleepers lie on a mattress that doesn’t have adequate support, their spine can curve excessively, increasing the risk of waking up with pain and discomfort.

Stomach sleepers on our team preferred the firm model, regardless of their weight group. Its support core provides substantial support, which allows the memory foam to cushion without bottoming out. The soft model uses softer memory foam, which caused our testers to sink too deeply into the mattress to feel comfortable.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

7/10

Soft: 10 / 10

Firm: 6 / 10

The Posturepedic Hybrid isolates motion well, thanks to its memory foam comfort system. The foam absorbs most of the movement caused by shifting sleeping positions, making this mattress a good option for co-sleepers concerned about disturbing a sleep partner.

We’ve found that memory foam mattresses typically perform well in this category. However, our testers did notice a significant difference between the soft and firm models. While the softer model provided excellent motion isolation, the firm allowed more movement to transfer from side to side.

Light sleepers and couples who wake each other often should consider the soft model. Otherwise, the firm should offer adequate motion isolation.

Pressure Relief

7.5/10

Soft: 10 / 10

Firm: 6 / 10

Both models of the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid relieve pressure well, though the soft version performed better in this area during our tests. The soft model provided deeper cushioning and more of a full-body hug than the firm model.

The mattress’ comfort system features memory foam is engineered to compress easily. It cradles the body and helps spread weight evenly across the mattress’ surface. Our testers noticed that this helped reduce pressure on their hips and shoulders.

Temperature Control

7/10

Soft: 4 / 10

Firm: 8 / 10

This mattress regulates temperature adequately for people who don’t tend to run hot, but sleepers who want a mattress that helps keep them cool at night may want to avoid the softer model.

Memory foam has a tendency to trap body heat, and during testing, we found that the comfort system on the Posturepedic Hybrid’s soft model had this issue.

The firm model’s denser memory foam retained its shape better than the soft version. This provided more space for air to flow through the mattress, helping our testers feel a bit cooler.

Edge Support

6.5/10

Soft: 2 / 10

Firm: 8 / 10

During edge support testing, our team rated the Posturepedic Hybrid very differently according to each model’s firmness level. Both models feature perimeter reinforcement, but the firm option provides considerably more edge support than the soft model.

When testing the firm model, we found that the entire mattress’ surface was usable, and the perimeter felt very stable.

However, the soft model didn’t provide nearly as much support. Its edges sagged significantly under direct pressure, which made it harder to get in and out of bed. Sleepers with mobility concerns will likely prefer the firm model.

Ease of Movement

6/10

Soft: 2 / 10

Firm: 8 / 10

The soft and firm versions of the Posturepedic Hybrid have very different sleep surfaces.

Our testers sank into the soft model’s plush memory foam layers and had trouble switching from one sleeping position to the other.

On the other hand, the memory foam in the firm model is more dense and responsive. This kept our testers from sinking in too deeply, which made it easier to change sleeping positions and move around.

People who like a mattress with a deep “hug” may prefer the soft model. Sleepers who enjoy a more responsive feel should opt for the firm model.

Off-Gassing

6.5/10

Memory foam typically emits a chemical-like smell after it’s manufactured, due to the release of volatile organic chemicals, or VOCs. This process isn’t generally considered harmful, but the smell can be unpleasant, particularly when a mattress is first opened.

Because of its foam components, the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid Mattress does have a noticeable amount of off-gassing. However, if you set it up in a well-ventilated area, the smell should dissipate fairly quickly.

Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid Mattress Review Breakdown

The Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid Mattress is available in two firmness levels that rank as soft (3) and firm (7), respectively, on our 10-point firmness scale.

This hybrid mattress begins with a proprietary cover woven with fibers designed to feel cool to the touch. The cover also includes Sealy’s patented Surface-Guard Technology, which is intended to protect against bacteria and allergens.

The comfort system is crafted from gel-infused memory foam engineered to provide both support and pressure relief. It contours to gently cradle the body and prevent pressure points. The gel infusion aims to regulate temperature by drawing excess heat and moisture away from the body during sleep.

The support core features a pocketed coil system engineered to provide stability and support. Each coil is wrapped individually, which gives the mattress flexibility while reducing overall motion transfer and noise. The support core is surrounded by reinforced edges to increase perimeter support.

In total, the mattress measures 13 inches tall. The cover isn’t machine-washable, but Sealy does provide directions for spot cleaning the fabric.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

The Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid Mattress has a good price for a hybrid made with high-quality materials. It may not be as affordable as some of the more basic hybrids, but it performed well enough in several of our testing categories to be considered a value. Each mattress purchase from Sealy also includes free delivery, in-home setup, and old mattress removal, which many shoppers may find helpful.

This model lacks some of the tech features found in luxury mattresses, but because of that, it doesn’t have the price tag that typically accompanies those extras. The Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid Mattress is an excellent pick for shoppers looking for a great value from a trusted brand.

Sealy offers this model in eight different sizes. Shoppers can choose between twin, twin long, full, queen, king, split king, California king, and split California king – which can be a difficult size to find. This hybrid mattress is 13 inches tall, so it should fit well with most standard size sheet sets.
