Molecule launched in 2018 and quickly garnered attention with products that promote rest and recovery for those who lead active lifestyles. The company has a team of professional athlete ambassadors that attest to the performance of its products. The Molecule product line includes two mattresses, the Molecule 1 and the Molecule 2, along with mattress toppers, a bed frame, and bedding.
We’ll cover the flagship Molecule 1 mattress in this review. While both Molecule mattress models are constructed with proprietary foam layers, the Molecule 1 is the more affordable option. The Molecule 2 has more zoned support and a comfort layer with improved airflow.
The Molecule 1 incorporates Molecule’s air-engineering technology with open-cell memory foam for temperature regulation. The gel-infused comfort layer draws heat away from the body and retains less heat than traditional memory foam. While the comfort layer relieves pressure, the zoned transition layer provides extra support.
In this Molecule mattress review, we’ll break down the construction, pricing, and sizing of the Molecule 1. We’ll include performance ratings and company policies to help shoppers decide if this mattress is the best fit for them. Based on verified customer feedback and extensive product testing, we’ll also cover recommendations for sleepers based on body type and sleeping position.
Watch the video below to see how the Molcule 1 Mattress performed when put to the test in our lab.
Sleeping Style and Body Weight
Side Sleepers
The Molecule 1 is beneficial for side sleepers. Those who sleep on their sides need ample cushioning at the shoulders and hips, which the Molecule 1 provides. This prevents pressure points from developing. The Molecule mattress also has zoned support that prevents the hips from sinking in excessively, which helps keep the spine aligned.
The Molecule 1 is highly rated by side sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds. These sleepers find it is soft enough for them to experience the conforming benefits of memory foam.
Side sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds find that the Molecule 1 balances comfort and support. These sleepers sink into the memory foam, but they are supported by the transition layer and support core below.
Those who weigh more than 230 pounds benefit from the thicker profile and zoned transition layer of the mattress, which keep them from sinking in excessively. That said, some may prefer a firmer mattress.
Back Sleepers
The Molecule 1 offers ample support for back sleepers who weigh less than 230 pounds. Back sleepers need lumbar support for spinal alignment. The zoned transition layer of the Molecule 1 offers firm support for the lower back, while the memory foam layer conforms closely for pressure relief. Those who sleep on their back and weigh less than 230 pounds benefit most from this balance of comfort and support.
For back sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds, the Molecule 1 is likely too soft. Even with the zoned transition layer, back sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds run the risk of sinking in too far and putting pressure on their lower backs. Sleepers in this category will benefit from a firmer mattress.
Stomach Sleepers
The Molecule 1 is best for stomach sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds. Stomach sleepers need enough support to keep their hips and abdomens from sinking in. For stomach sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds, the Molecule’s zoned transition layer keeps the hips and abdomen supported. The conforming memory foam comfort layer cushions the shoulders and chest for added comfort.
For stomach sleepers who weigh more than 130 pounds, the Molecule 1 only provides fair support. These sleepers are more likely to sink into the mattress too deeply, putting pressure on the lower back. Stomach sleepers often prefer a firmer mattress instead to provide the support that they need.
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
The Molecule 1 isolates motion exceptionally well. It is on par with most memory foam mattresses, due primarily to its comfort system. Generally, foam mattresses isolate motion better than hybrid and latex models.
The two-inch comfort layer of memory foam in the Molecule 1 absorbs movements like shifting positions and getting in and out of bed. It responds to pressure, conforms closely, and returns to its original shape slowly once pressure is removed. Since there are no coils in the mattress, there is minimal bounce. The bed’s all-foam construction prevents most motion transfer.
The Molecule’s strong degree of motion isolation is beneficial for those who share the bed. Most sleepers will not be disturbed by their partner moving throughout the night.
The Molecule 1 is highly rated for pressure relief. Its foam layers evenly distribute body weight and relieve tension. Foam mattresses typically provide pressure relief by conforming closely to the body and cushioning the shoulders, hips, and back. This helps keep the spine aligned and prevents pressure points from developing.
The memory foam comfort layer contours to the shape of the body for top-notch pressure relief. The zoned transition layer below offers targeted support. It is softer at the head and feet and firmer towards the center. This ensures ample support for the lumbar region and reduces pressure on the lower back. The firm support core keeps sleepers from sinking in too far.
This is most beneficial for back and side sleepers, and those who weigh less than 230 pounds. Stomach sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds may sink into the mattress more, which will put pressure on the lower back.
A common complaint with memory foam mattresses is their tendency to retain heat. The Molecule mattress is designed to offset this and regulate temperature better than similar models.
The fabric cover of the Molecule 1 incorporates a temperature-sensitive polymer to wick away heat and moisture. The comfort layer is made of an open-cell memory foam. The structure of this foam increases airflow throughout the comfort layer and helps dissipate heat. It is also infused with micro gel beads to draw heat away from the body. The breathable polyfoam core adds airflow to the mattress.
That said, the mattress has a medium firm firmness and foam layers that conform closely. Some heat retention is possible, especially for hot sleepers.
The Molecule 1 lacks edge support, which is expected with most foam mattresses. Compared to hybrid models, foam mattresses do not have reinforced perimeters. This results in below-average edge support.
The Molecule mattress compresses at the edges when pressure is applied, thanks to its softer foam layers. The firm support core helps to a certain extent, but those who sleep near the edge of the bed may not feel properly supported.
The lack of edge support is also noticeable when sitting on the edge of the bed. This is an important consideration for those who have difficulty getting in and out of bed.
Memory foam conforms closely to relieve pressure, but it can restrict movement as a result. The Molecule 1 has a two-inch comfort layer of memory foam that allows sleepers to sink into the mattress. This makes it harder to change positions.
The same qualities that allow the Molecule 1 to isolate motion exceptionally well can also make sleepers feel stuck in the mattress. The foam comfort layer returns to its original shape slowly, and there is minimal bounce to the mattress.
There is an initial “new mattress” smell to the Molecule 1 mattress, but it should dissipate within a couple of days. This is common with most foam mattresses, as they contain odors from the foam manufacturing process.
Molecule uses a Variable Foaming Process to reduce emissions and prevent off-gassing. The Molecule 1 is CertiPUR-US certified and low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Keeping the bedroom ventilated and letting the mattress air out before adding bedding will help any initial odor dissipate.
Sleep Foundation Special Offer

The Molecule 1 is a foam mattress constructed with proprietary layers of memory foam and polyfoam. The 12.25-inch profile is thicker than the average foam mattress.
The Molecule mattress is only available in one firmness option, which is rated as a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The mattress uses a memory foam comfort layer and a zoned transition layer to relieve pressure and support the body. The memory foam conforms closely, giving sleepers the feeling of sleeping in the mattress, rather than on it. This body-hugging feel is commonly associated with memory foam and often preferred by side sleepers and those with sharp pressure points.
The advanced cover of the Molecule 1 incorporates a temperature-sensitive polymer that adjusts to the sleeper’s body temperature, helping the cover to wick away heat and moisture. Beneath the cover is a two-inch comfort layer of the brand’s proprietary memory foam blend, known as RestoreFlo. This memory foam has an open-cell structure to encourage airflow and dissipate heat. It is also infused with conductive gel beads, which helps offset the memory foam’s tendency to sleep hot.
The transition layer of the Molecule 1 is three inches of polyfoam. This foam blend, called RecoveryFlo, is a contoured response layer that provides targeted support. The foam has three zones, including softer zones at the head and feet, and a firmer zone in the center. This relieves pressure at the head, neck, and legs, while properly supporting the lumbar region.
The support core of the Molecule 1 consists of seven inches of firm polyfoam. This base helps keep the spine aligned. Its breathable construction increases airflow throughout the mattress and helps dissipate heat.
The foams used in the Molecule 1 are made with an eco-friendly Variable Pressure Foaming technique, resulting in reduced emissions. The mattress is CertiPUR-US certified, meaning it is low in VOCs and made without the use of heavy metals or harmful chemicals.
