Designed and built by Canadians for Canadians, the Douglas Mattress is a popular option from the team at GoodMorning.com. It is an all-foam bed with a straightforward design, thoughtful materials, and an affordable price.

GoodMorning.com has an ample product line. The company offers six mattresses in addition to the Douglas:

  • The Juno, their lowest priced option, is an all-foam mattress with a medium firm feel and a height of eight inches.
  • The Recore, another all-foam option, measures 10.5-inches tall, has a medium firm firmness level, and features a bouncy top layer made of latex.
  • The Brunswick is a moderately priced hybrid with gel-infused memory foam comfort layers and a firmness feel of medium firm.
  • The Logan & Cove is an extra-tall (14-inch) hybrid with multiple layers of diverse materials that is available in a choice of firmness options.

As a foam mattress with a balanced feel and affordable price, the Douglas is an important part of this product lineup. Our review goes in-depth to help you decide — based on its construction, pricing, and performance — whether the Douglas Mattress is the right match for your bedroom.

If you’re looking closely at the Douglas Mattress and wondering if it’s a good match, two things to have in mind are your body weight and sleeping position. Both of these factors can directly influence your mattress needs.

Side Sleepers

If you are on your side, keeping a healthy spinal alignment means making sure that the wider parts of the body, primarily the hips and shoulders, get the right amount of support. On a mattress that’s too hard, you may have pain in those areas, and they may be pushed out of line with the spine. On a mattress that’s too soft, the hips and shoulders will descend too far, which can also harm alignment. Given these needs, the best bets for side sleepers are mattresses that range from medium soft to medium firm and have at least moderate contouring. The Douglas Mattress fits the bill, offering a sleeping surface that can bring both comfort and spinal support to most side sleepers regardless of their weight.

Back Sleepers

Because they don’t put pressure on the mattress in the same way, back sleepers have very different needs than stomach sleepers. Their main hot spot is the lower back, where the curve of the lumbar spine needs just enough cushion to be accommodated, but not so much softness as to allow the midsection to sink deeply into the mattress.

The type of mattress that tends to best meet these needs is one with a medium to firm feel and light-to-moderate contouring. The Douglas meets these criteria for most back sleepers up to 230 pounds. However, it may be too soft for back sleepers over 230 pounds as they are more likely to sink further into the comfort layers.

Stomach Sleepers

Sleeping on your stomach can create even more pressure on the lower back than sleeping on your back. Lumbar strain can occur because people tend to carry more weight in their abdomens. Stomach sleepers often push too far in on a softer mattress and drag their lumbar spines out of alignment. Most face-down sleepers are also wary of a soft bed as it can feel like it is smothering or suffocating them. For these reasons, the top options for stomach sleepers are usually medium firm to firm with only limited contouring. The Douglas works best for these sleepers if they weigh under 130 pounds, but those who weigh more are inclined to feel that it is too soft.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

7/10

The Douglas Mattress gets an above-average rating for motion isolation, driven primarily by its top layer of foam. That layer, made with two inches of ecoLight memory foam, is crafted to have characteristics that are similar to memory foam, which is widely known for its ability to limit motion transfer. While the ecoLight layer provides a solid degree of motion isolation, the second layer of foam has more bounce to it that can make it easier for movement to be felt on other parts of the bed.

Overall, the Douglas Mattress has sufficient motion isolation so that you normally won’t notice if a partner turns over or changes their sleeping position. That being said, it won’t completely eliminate more pronounced movements like getting in and out of bed.

Pressure Relief

7/10

The comfort system of the Douglas provides a high level of pressure relief.

The ecoLight foam has the ability to cradle the body and serve as a buffer against excess impact at major pressure points. The Elastex foam chips in an added degree of light contouring while shoring up the comfort system against exaggerated and unwanted sinking. This combination allows the Douglas to promote healthy spinal alignment and accommodate the parts of the body prone to morning aches and pains.

Temperature Control

4.5/10

The Douglas Mattress is roughly average when it comes to temperature regulation, making its performance comparable to most all-foam mattresses.

When the top layer of foam cradles the body, it can prevent air from moving around the skin and cooling it down. Over the course of the night, this can lead to heat retention both in the foam and around the body. The gel infusion in the ecoLight foam works to decrease heat buildup, but it doesn’t eliminate it entirely. The Tencel fabric in the cover draws moisture away from the body to facilitate comfort cooling, which can counteract some heat collection as well.

Overall, most people won’t find that the Douglas sleeps especially hot, though people who are prone to overheating may find it to be too warm.

Edge Support

6/10

The Douglas Mattress is like most all-foam beds in that its weakest point is around the perimeter. At the edge, there is less surrounding material to support the foam as it compresses. As a result, the amount of sink is more noticeable and can even cause a person to feel as though there is a lack of stability right on the edge.

Though the performance of the Douglas in this category is rated as below-average, the Elastex and base polyfoams help hedge against excess compression at the edge. Although customers will be aware of more sinkage, they won’t be likely to feel as if they are going to roll out of the bed.

Ease of Movement

4.5/10

In the Douglas Mattress comfort system, bounce is minimal in one foam layer and significant in the other. The ecoLight foam offers little responsiveness, but the Elastex foam underneath it has a springy, latex-like feel. As a result of this combination, ease of movement on the Douglas is about average.

Changing sleeping positions is smoother than on a traditional memory foam mattress, but a bit more difficult than on a latex bed or most hybrids. The Tencel cover is sleek and does not impede movement or catch on sheets.

Off-Gassing

5/10

Akin to the majority of all-foam mattresses, you can expect some off-gassing when first getting the Douglas Mattress set up in your bedroom.

The light smell comes from volatile organic compounds (VOCs), remnants of the production process, that are released when the packaging is removed. These VOCs are generally considered to be harmless.

The Douglas has some smell to it, but is less odorous than some lower-cost foam beds. For most people, the “new mattress smell” registers as little more than a nuisance and fades away within a few hours, or at the most, a few days.

Douglas Mattress Review Breakdown

One of the best ways that customers can get to know the Douglas Mattress and its benefits and downsides is by first getting a solid understanding of its construction.

The cover of the Douglas is made with a fabric called Tencel that is produced using fibers from eucalyptus trees. The production process focuses on sustainable inputs and recycling water through closed-loop systems to make the final product more eco-friendly. In terms of performance, Tencel is smooth, soft, and breathable. The top half of the cover can be unzipped and removed for easy washing.

The interior construction involves three components. The top layer is two inches of gel-infused ecoLight memory foam. For this material, a portion of the petrochemicals normally used to make foam are replaced with natural vegetable oils, reducing the ecoLight foam’s carbon footprint. Its performance is in many ways similar to memory foam, offering noticeable contouring that helps relieve pressure, support spinal alignment, and decrease motion transfer. The foam is interspersed with gel to slow down the rate at which it collects heat during the night.

The second layer is two inches of Elastex polyfoam, which has a latex-like feel that provides significant bounce and light contouring. As part of the comfort system, it works in tandem with the ecoLight foam to create a blend of bounce and contouring that cushions the body without causing sleepers to feel stuck in the bed.

The third layer of the Douglas Mattress is its polyfoam support core. This layer measures in at six inches and uses a denser polyfoam that acts as a sturdy base for the top layers.

The comfort feel of the Douglas is medium firm, rating as a 6 on the typical firmness scale. It is not offered in any other firmness levels.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

The Douglas Mattress has an accessible price point that makes it a solid value for an all-foam mattress. It was fashioned to be a quality foam mattress with special appeal to sleepers who prefer products with a lower carbon footprint. While eco-conscious construction can often mean a higher price, that isn’t the case with the Douglas. The mattress has a comparable or lower price than many beds that have a similar design but without low-carbon foam.

The bed has a 10-inch profile and weighs about the same as other all-foam beds of this height. It is available in all six standard mattress sizes. Its detailed dimensions and retail pricing (before any coupons or promotions) are listed below.
