Shoppers with a limited budget may find the Nova Hybrid too expensive

Casper is a New York-based company best known for its mattresses shipped directly to your doorstep in a box. The lineup includes the Original, the Wave Hybrid, the Element, and the Nova. The Element is an all-foam model, the Wave Hybrid is a hybrid bed, and the Original and the Nova are available with either foam or hybrid designs.

Billed as Casper’s plushest mattress, the Nova was developed by Casper as a next-generation model. The Nova Hybrid features two comfort layers. The top layer consists of AirScape open-cell polyfoam. The second comfort layer, also AirScape polyfoam, is divided into three firmness zones. This ensures enhanced support for the lower back and hips, along with gentler cradling for other areas of the body. The Nova Hybrid also has a transitional memory foam layer divided into seven firmness levels for additional zoned reinforcement. The support core features pocketed coils encased in high-density foam.

The all-foam version of the Nova has a very similar design, including the same comfort and transitional layers. This model’s support core is constructed with solid high-density polyfoam, rather than coils. The all-foam Nova is available through select retailers, and cannot be purchased directly from Casper.

While other pages on this site will cover Casper’s other models, this review will focus exclusively on the Nova Hybrid. We’ll examine its construction, pricing, and performance, as well as Casper’s shipping, return, and warranty policies.

Side Sleepers

The Nova Hybrid’s plush feel makes the mattress well-suited to side sleeping. The two layers of AirScape foam cushion and cradle a side sleeper’s curves, while the zoned transition layer gives deeper contouring. This allows the sleeper’s shoulders and legs to sink in the right amount while preventing their hips from sinking in too deeply. Thanks to the strong contouring, most side sleepers are also likely to experience very good pressure relief.

Because it is on the softer end of the range sleepers tend to prefer, the AirScape may be the best match for side sleepers who weigh under 230 pounds, as they should experience an excellent balance between support and contouring. Side sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds will also probably experience good contouring and support, but their hips and shoulders may sink in slightly more than ideal. This could contribute to some pressure buildup and make it more difficult to maintain proper spinal alignment.

Back Sleepers

Zoning in the transition layer can help support a back sleeper’s spinal alignment by preventing their hips from dipping too far into the mattress. Because of its plush feel, the Nova Hybrid is best suited to back sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds.

Back sleepers who weigh between 130 pounds and 230 pounds may also enjoy the Nova Hybrid’s combination of softness and support, but they are more likely to experience some sinkage around their hips. Some individuals who weigh over 230 pounds may not find the Nova Hybrid supportive enough, and this could put a strain on their spines.

Stomach Sleepers

A stomach sleeper’s hips and belly frequently sink deeper into their mattress due to the extra weight many people carry around their midsections. Zoning within the second comfort and transitional layers adds extra support around the middle of the bed, so stomach sleepers might not experience as much sinkage. However, this varies by weight group.

Stomach sleepers who weigh under 230 pounds will likely experience a soft surface with good support. Their midsections may sink in slightly, but it’s unlikely to put a significant strain on their spines. Those who weigh over 230 pounds might notice more sinkage, which may make it difficult to maintain ideal spinal alignment.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

8/10

The plush feel of the Nova Hybrid helps it isolate motion to a greater extent than the average hybrid model on the market. Two layers of AirScape foam in the comfort layer absorb motion, which reduces how much movement a sleeper will feel when their partner moves during the night.

The Nova Hybrid also transfers minimal vibrations across the surface of the bed. The coil layer gives it more bounce, and this could contribute to slight motion transfer. Since the coils are pocketed to allow them to move independently, we wouldn’t expect this motion transfer to be significant enough to interrupt sleep for most individuals.

Pressure Relief

8.5/10

Like many mattresses with thick foam comfort layers, the Nova Hybrid has very good pressure-relieving qualities.

The two layers of AirScape foam in the comfort system offer plush cushioning and some contouring. A zoned transitional memory foam layer provides deeper contouring to the shoulders and legs while supporting the hips to prevent excessive sinkage. This design shifts some of the sleeper’s weight off from their hips and shoulders to reduce pressure in these key regions. It also encourages proper alignment.

Temperature Control

7/10

Because it is engineered for cooling, the Nova Hybrid sleeps cooler than many models that use foam in their comfort systems. This may make it a good choice for individuals who need the cushioning of foam, but tend to overheat during the night.

AirScape is a proprietary polyfoam. This polyfoam’s open-cell structure allows air to flow into and out of the mattress, so heat can dissipate. Perforations within the foam amplify this effect.

Edge Support

7/10

The Casper Nova Hybrid’s edge support is on par with many hybrid models. This stable edge is likely to allow most individuals to use the full surface of the mattress without limitations. However, individuals who weigh over 230 pounds may feel less secure sleeping near the perimeter.

Because of its plush feel, people will likely experience some slight sinkage before they reach the edge support provided by the mattress’s firmer core.

Ease of Movement

6.5/10

The ease of movement on the Nova Hybrid is equivalent to many hybrid models.

Since the mattress has a plusher feel, it may allow sleepers to sink in a little more than average, and this cradling could make movement slightly more difficult. However, polyfoam tends to respond to changes in pressure more quickly than memory foam, so the Nova shouldn’t cause a “trapped in the bed” feeling.

Off-Gassing

7/10

Like all new mattresses, the Casper Nova Hybrid may have an odor at first. Synthetic foam tends to have smells left over from manufacturing, which are trapped in the bed when the mattress ships compressed. The Nova Hybrid is likely to have a similar off-gassing odor to many boxed mattresses that contain foam.

These smells are usually considered harmless for most individuals, and they should dissipate relatively quickly. Owners who are bothered by the odor can leave their new mattress in a well-ventilated room to air out. The mattress should air out within a few hours to a few days.

Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress Review Breakdown

Encasing the Nova Hybrid is a cover made from a blend of recycled polyester and polyester, cotton, rayon, and spandex. According to Casper, each Nova Hybrid cover is constructed using up to 70 recycled bottles.

Two layers of AirScape polyfoam make up the Nova Hybrid’s comfort system. AirScape is a proprietary polyfoam engineered for cooling. Perforations in the material allow extra airflow to reduce heat retention. The second AirScape layer is divided into three firmness zones, which ensures distinct support levels for different areas of the body. The Nova Hybrid’s memory foam transitional layer is divided into seven firmness zones for the same purpose.

The Nova Hybrid’s support core is built with pocketed coils encased in high-density polyfoam. These coils promote additional airflow, and give the mattress more bounce and support.
