Boll & Branch started out making ethically sourced bedsheets, then expanded into gifts and bath products. The company more recently broke into the mattress industry with the flagship Boll & Branch mattress, released in 2018. This is the only mattress currently on offer from Boll & Branch.

The Boll & Branch mattress is a latex hybrid featuring a unique construction with two layers of coils. Its medium firm feel is well-suited to a wide variety of sleeper types, and it boasts all the advantages of a hybrid including healthy airflow, strong edge support, and plenty of bounce. Complimentary White Glove delivery is included with every Boll & Branch mattress purchase.

We’ll go over the materials and construction of the Boll and Branch mattress and examine how these affect the sleeping experience, taking into consideration body type and preferred sleeping position. We’ll also cover practical information such as pricing, shipping, and sleep trial information to help you make a decision.

Side Sleepers

The Boll & Branch mattress supplies excellent pressure relief for side sleepers who weigh more than 130 pounds and less than 230 pounds. These sleepers receive contouring from the latex and micro-coils, which adapt to the curves of the body and help relieve pressure points in the hips and shoulders. The mattress also conforms well to sleepers over 230 pounds, although some people in this group may find their hips sink in a little too far, which can interfere with spinal alignment.

The mattress is a little too firm for side sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds. These sleepers mostly stay on top of the mattress and are unable to benefit fully from its contouring. They may experience sore hips and shoulders where these dig into the mattress.

Back Sleepers

With its medium firmness level, the Boll & Branch mattress provides a balance of support and pressure relief that works well for back sleepers. The wool padding and latex layers ease pressure points, while the two coil layers push back in the lumbar region to help keep the spine in line.

The mattress doesn’t conform closely enough to fill in the lumbar area in back sleepers under 130 pounds. This makes it difficult to maintain proper spinal alignment and can lead to lower back pain and potential pressure points in some sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

Most stomach sleepers should find the Boll & Branch mattress to be sufficiently supportive.

Stomach sleepers are most comfortable on a firmer mattress that prevents the hips from sinking in too far, thus keeping the spine on an even plane. The Boll & Branch mattress has a medium firm surface that does the trick for stomach sleepers under 230 pounds, as these individuals don’t sink as far into the mattress.

Stomach sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds, however, exert more pressure on the mattress and may find that the mattress compresses too much under the midsection. This can force the spine to bend at unnatural angles and put pressure on the back and neck.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

6.5/10

The Boll & Branch mattress allows some motion to travel across the surface of the bed, but on the whole, it does a relatively good job of reducing overnight disruptions.

Latex and coils are both bouncy materials that don’t have the point elasticity of a material like memory foam. However, since the coils are individually wrapped, they are able to respond in a more targeted manner than a traditional innerspring mattress. This lowers the amount of motion that is transferred from one side of the bed to the other.

Overall, most people who sleep with a partner should find that the Boll & Branch mattress has adequate motion isolation. However, sensitive sleepers may prefer an all-foam mattress that can keep motion transfer to an absolute minimum.

Pressure Relief

8/10

The Boll & Branch mattress offers moderate contouring that relieves the worst of the pressure points in most sleepers. The combination of Talalay latex and two layers of coils distributes body weight, keeping sleepers “floating” on top of the mattress. The wool-polyester padding also adds some cushioning.

That said, the mattress may be too firm for side sleepers and back sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds. These groups don’t sink as far into the mattress and are likely to experience pressure buildup in areas like the hips and shoulders.

Temperature Control

9/10

Temperature control is a strong point of the Boll & Branch mattress, which is constructed with breathable materials.

The cotton cover and wool padding wick moisture away from the sleeper. Beneath this, the aerated Talalay latex prevents heat build-up by allowing air to pass through unimpeded. Air circulation through the two layers of coils allows any remaining heat to dissipate.

The mattress doesn’t conform closely to the sleeper and doesn’t contain any heat-trapping foams, making it a very good choice for hot sleepers or those who live in warm climates.

Edge Support

8/10

Like most hybrids, the Boll & Branch mattress has a sturdy perimeter that is more than suitable for those who like to sit on the edge of the bed. This is mostly thanks to the pocketed coils, which are reinforced around the edges to prevent sagging and feelings of roll-off.

Sleepers of all body types should have no trouble sleeping right up to the edge of the mattress. This effectively increases the usable sleeping space for people who share the bed. Strong edges can also help for those who have trouble getting in and out of bed.

Ease of Movement

9/10

With two layers of latex and two layers of coils, the Boll & Branch mattress has a very responsive surface that makes it easy to switch sleeping positions.

Unlike with a memory foam mattress, sleepers hardly sink at all into the Boll & Branch mattress. Latex has a quick response to pressure and doesn’t retain body impressions when changing positions. The two coil layers also add pushback that further facilitates movement. Combination sleepers should feel right at home on the Boll & Branch mattress.

Off-Gassing

9/10

The use of natural materials in the Boll & Branch mattress greatly reduces the off-gassing that is typically associated with a new mattress. Additionally, the mattress is not shrink-wrapped for shipping, meaning any odors that were present will have mostly been able to air out.

Off-gassing is usually the result of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) being released from polyfoam and memory foam. Chemical fire barriers and adhesives can also cause strong smells.

The Boll & Branch mattress is hand-tufted and contains no synthetic foams or chemical fire barriers, so it won’t emit these typical odors. Some customers may notice a faint rubbery smell from the latex, but this should soon dissipate through the bed’s breathable coils.

Boll & Branch Mattress Review Breakdown

The Boll & Branch mattress is a coil-on-coil latex hybrid mattress. In total, the mattress is 13.5 inches tall, which is higher than average but fairly normal for a hybrid mattress. Due to its high profile, the mattress will require deep-pocketed sheets.

The mattress has a breathable cover made of organic cotton. The cover is not removable and should be steam-cleaned if necessary to remove stains. Boll & Branch has avoided using chemical adhesives, choosing instead to hand-tuft the mattress together.

Underneath the cover is a layer of padding made of a wool-and-polyester blend. Wool is known for its moisture-wicking capabilities, and it works together with the breathable cotton to draw heat away from the sleeper. It also acts as a natural fire barrier and adds some initial cushioning to the mattress.

This wool pad is followed by two layers of durable Talalay latex. The top layer of latex is infused with graphite, which helps conduct heat away from the body. Latex is naturally breathable, and both layers of latex in the Boll & Branch mattress have pincore holes to further increase airflow.

Talalay latex is known for its buoyant feel. The latex layers in this mattress help to relieve pressure points, yet they keep sleepers sleeping “on” and not “in” the mattress.

Beneath the latex is a layer of steel micro-coils. These flex locally in response to pressure, forming a deep cradle that improves spinal alignment. The micro-coils sit atop a layer of twice-tempered pocketed coils that functions as a support core and ensures sturdy support around the edges of the bed. Unlike traditional innerspring coils, these coils are individually wrapped. They move independently of each other, which reduces motion transfer and allows them to provide more targeted spinal support.

The combination of latex and coils makes for a springy mattress that doesn’t hinder movement. In terms of firmness, the Boll & Branch mattress has a medium firm feel. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the firmest, this would fall around a 6. This is within the firmness range preferred by the vast majority of sleepers, providing a fairly even balance of support and pressure relief.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

The Boll & Branch mattress has an average price-point given its construction. Mattresses made with natural materials like the latex, wool, and organic cotton found in the Boll & Branch mattress tend to be more expensive.

Boll & Branch uses organic, Fair Trade-certified cotton. While the mattress has undoubtable appeal for eco-conscious consumers, it is worth noting that the Boll & Branch mattress is missing quite a few of the certifications that you would normally find in a mattress at this price-point, such as certifications for organic wool and latex. However, in terms of quality, the mattress is made with durable materials that more than justify the price.

The warranty does not extend to the fabric, handles, corner guards, or sheet fit of the mattress, nor does it cover comfort preference.

Customers are responsible for shipping and handling fees when returning or replacing a mattress under the warranty.
