Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, ViscoSoft produces a range of quality sleep products, including mattresses, pillows, mattress pads and toppers, sheets, and other bedding.

The ViscoSoft Edge Mattress is the company’s only all-foam bed. The mattress has a medium (5) firmness and a unique construction, with four layers of foam and a cooling cover made with phase change material. Its distinctive comfort system, which contains silver-infused memory foam and latex-like polyfoam with a subtle bounce, distinguishes the ViscoSoft Edge from other all-foam beds.

The company offers three additional mattresses, including the ViscoSoft Edge Hybrid. The Edge Hybrid is a companion mattress to the ViscoSoft Edge, but it has a pocketed coil support core and a slightly firmer feel.

The coil-based ViscoSoft React Hybrid Latex and the React Hybrid Foam round out the company’s mattress options. The React beds are designed for affordability and come at slightly lower price-points than the Edge mattresses.

We provide a comprehensive evaluation of the ViscoSoft Edge Mattress — including its construction, performance, sizing, and pricing — to help you determine whether the all-foam bed is suitable for you.

Side Sleepers

The all-foam ViscoSoft Edge Mattress works well for side sleepers of all body types. Its memory foam comfort layers contour to the body’s natural curves, which is essential for side sleepers because they need the mattress to accommodate their hips and shoulders.

Additionally, the slightly springy polyfoam in the comfort system and dense polyfoam in the support core distribute weight evenly, ensuring side sleepers aren’t enveloped by the softer comfort layers.

Our testing shows that side sleepers weighing less than 230 pounds receive excellent support and comfort from the ViscoSoft Edge. Those over 230 pounds may experience slightly deeper sinkage but are still well supported.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers generally don’t need significant pressure relief or cradling, and instead require a mattress that firmly supports their spine. While the Edge’s soft memory foam comfort layers conform closely around the body, the more responsive polyfoam layer beneath offers buoyant support. The 6 inches of high-density polyfoam in the support core also adds to the bed’s medium firmness and keeps the spine from falling out of alignment due to deep sinkage.

Our tests demonstrate that the ViscoSoft Edge Mattress provides excellent spinal support and appropriate cushioning to back sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds. Back sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds also enjoy a good sleep experience. Those weighing more may want to consider a firmer bed with less contouring for stronger posture support.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers require the most significant support and need the least contouring. Without adequate firmness, some stomach sleepers experience sinkage in the abdominal and chest areas, leading to poor posture, discomfort, and sleep disruption.

The ViscoSoft Edge Mattress’ medium firmness level and plush cushioning don’t give most stomach sleepers the firm support they need to keep their spine aligned. The polyfoam in the bed’s comfort system and support core doesn’t sufficiently counteract its softer memory foam materials, making it a questionable choice for stomach sleepers weighing more than 130 pounds.

However, stomach sleepers under 130 pounds receive adequate support since they put less pressure on the mattress and experience less sinking.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

9/10

Like most all-foam beds, the contouring ViscoSoft Edge Mattress does a good job of isolating motion. The 4 inches of conforming memory foam in its comfort system cradles the body gently and limits motion transfer across the bed’s surface.

Its superior motion isolation makes it a very good option for couples, especially if one or both partners are light sleepers. The Edge’s ability to prevent motion transfer can also benefit sleepers who share a bed with a large pet.

Pressure Relief

8.5/10

The conforming memory foam in the Edge’s comfort system molds to sleepers’ curves, relieving pressure in key spots like the hips and shoulders.

Meanwhile, a subtle bounce from the responsive polyfoam in the bed’s comfort system prevents sinkage. The somewhat springy polyfoam layer, known as faux latex, supports sleepers evenly to alleviate pressure on the spine.

With moderate conforming and plush cushioning, this all-foam mattress effectively reduces pressure points for side sleepers, which is the sleep style requiring the most contouring. Back sleepers weighing less than 230 pounds also enjoy adequate pressure reduction in the lumbar area.

Temperature Control

5.5/10

Heat retention is a common drawback of viscoelastic materials, so it’s no surprise that the ViscoSoft Edge Mattress performs only averagely in this area. Its hugging memory foam cradles the sleeper, which increases skin contact and reduces airflow around the body — both of which are factors that contribute to heat buildup.

However, its cooling cover is infused with phase change material that’s designed to absorb and dissipate heat, which counteracts some of the warming effects of its memory foam comfort layers.

Exceptionally hot sleepers and those weighing more than 230 pounds may prefer a mattress with better breathability.

Edge Support

6.5/10

The ViscoSoft Edge Mattress provides decent edge support for an all-foam mattress. Sleepers may feel some sinkage near the bed’s edges, but it’s not significant compared with memory foam mattresses made with lesser materials.

People weighing more than 230 pounds are most likely to lose support near the bed’s perimeter. Couples might also notice some sagging when engaged in sex near its edges.

Ease of Movement

5.5/10

Despite having 4 inches of contouring memory foam, the inclusion of responsive faux latex polyfoam in the comfort system and dense polyfoam in the support core adds a little bounce to the ViscoSoft Edge Mattress.

With a medium firmness level, the mattress limits sinkage for sleepers weighing less than 230 pounds. Heavier individuals may want to consider a bed with sturdier support, such as a hybrid or innerspring.

Off-Gassing

6/10

Foam mattresses release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) more readily than other mattress types, and the ViscoSoft Edge Mattress is not an exception.

The all-foam bed produces a fair amount of off-gassing, which means it may emit an unpleasant, chemical-like odor after being removed from packaging. However, it’s important to remember that off-gassing isn’t considered harmful and fades quickly, usually within a few hours to a couple of days.

If you’re bothered by off-gassing, we recommend opening windows and doors or using a fan to increase airflow in your bedroom for a short time after receiving and unpacking the new mattress.

ViscoSoft Edge Mattress Review Breakdown

The ViscoSoft Edge Mattress is topped with a cozy, visually appealing cover that’s knitted with phase change yarn. The phase change material is engineered to regulate temperature by absorbing and dissipating heat.

Beneath the cover, a 2-inch layer of silver-infused memory foam in the comfort system provides posture support and cushioning. An additional 2 inches of plush memory foam offers gentle contouring to relieve pressure points while minimizing motion transfer. A 2-inch layer of polyfoam completes the comfort system. Called faux latex, the polyfoam has a bouncy feel similar to natural latex that prevents deep sinkage and promotes spinal alignment.

In the support core, a 6-inch layer of high-density polyfoam reinforces the comfort system and the bed’s perimeter. The dense foam adds durability, reducing the chances of premature sagging. The base of the mattress is wrapped in a jacquard-knit cover with anti-slip beads for extra stability.

The combination of foam materials in the ViscoSoft Edge Mattress creates a medium firmness level that adequately supports a range of sleepers. Its pressure-relieving design is especially well suited to side sleepers, as well as back sleepers who weigh less than 230 pounds. However, heavier back sleepers and stomach sleepers over 130 pounds may prefer a coil-based hybrid or innerspring model that provides greater support and a firmer feel.
