The Tulo Hybrid Mattress is the only hybrid offering from Tulo, a direct-to-consumer company that also sells memory foam mattresses and pillows. Available in six firmness and thickness options, a variety of people can find a Tulo Hybrid that suits their needs. The various Tulo Hybrid models have been rated highly by sleepers of nearly all body weights and sleep position preferences. Side sleepers are especially likely to find this hybrid bed supportive and comfortable.

Each of the six Tulo Hybrid models contains a pocketed coil core that provides firmness and support. Differences in comfort layers sitting above this support core ultimately determine how each mattress option feels to sleepers. The Hybrid comes in the following options as labeled by the company:

Our testing found that these firmness descriptors are accurate for the 8-inch Firm, 10-inch Medium, and 12-inch Medium Firm models. However, we determined that the 11-inch Medium Firm, 12-inch Plush, and 13-inch Medium Firm options all have medium (5) firmness levels, based on our 10-point firmness scale.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers of all sizes can find comfort and support in a Tulo Hybrid Mattress. Transitional layers in the 10-inch, 11-inch, 12-inch Plush, 12-inch Medium Firm, and 13-inch models in particular allow heavier sections of a side sleeper’s body to sink into the bed, while still supporting lighter body parts. As a result, the mattress promotes spinal alignment and sleepers are less likely to develop pressure points in their necks, shoulders, or hips.

Side sleepers choosing from Tulo Hybrid Mattress models should consider their body weight and how they like a mattress to feel. The 10-inch, 11-inch, 12-inch Plush, and 13-inch models all offer excellent support and comfort for side sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds, but the thicker of these models feel softer and more conforming. The 10-inch, 11-inch, and 12-inch Medium Firm models are best for side sleepers weighing between 130 and 230 pounds, and the 12-inch Medium Firm excels for side sleepers over 230 pounds.

Back Sleepers

Most back sleepers can find a Tulo Hybrid Mattress option that provides adequate lumbar support for their needs. Lumbar support is important to back sleepers because a bed that’s too soft can result in an arched back and discomfort.

The 10-inch, 11-inch, and 12-inch Plush models offer excellent support for back sleepers weighing under 130 pounds. The thicker models feel softer and are better suited to sleepers who prefer a mattress they can sink into a bit. Back sleepers weighing between 130 and 230 pounds can choose from the 8-inch and 12-inch Medium Firm models, both of which provide firmer support. The 8-inch model contains less foam, making it a good option for people who like a more responsive mattress.

Although the 8-inch and 12-inch Medium Firm options offer adequate support for back sleepers over 230 pounds, people in this group might want to seek a more supportive mattress.

Stomach Sleepers

Generally, people who sleep on their stomach require firmer beds than other types of sleepers. Increased firmness and support promote spinal alignment in a stomach sleeper. If a mattress is too soft, their body can sink into the bed, causing the neck to arch, which creates pressure points and discomfort.

Stomach sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds should find excellent support and comfort on the firm 8-inch Tulo Hybrid model. Stomach sleepers weighing between 130 and 230 pounds also rate the 8-inch model positively, along with the 10-inch, 11-inch, and 12-inch Medium Firm models. Stomach sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds might enjoy the 8-inch or 12-inch Medium Firm beds, though some might require a thicker or firmer mattress in order to experience adequate support.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

6.5/10

8″/12″ Medium Firm: 6 / 10

10″/11″/12″/Plush 13″: 7.5 / 10

All Tulo Hybrid options have either good or very good motion isolation. The 10-inch, 11-inch, 12-inch Plush, and 13-inch models are the best at isolating motion, primarily due to their foam comfort layers. Foam — and particularly memory foam — tends to absorb movement rather than transfer it across the surface of the bed.

Sleepers who share a bed with a partner, child, or pet tend to value motion isolation most. When a sleep partner gets in or out of bed during the night, their movement should be less noticeable on a mattress that excels at isolating motion.

The 8-inch and 12-inch Medium Firm options do not isolate motion quite as well as the other models. The 8-inch option contains less foam, and the 12-inch Medium Firm model contains foam that is firmer than its 12-inch Plush counterpart.

Pressure Relief

7/10

8″: 4.5 / 10

12″ Medium Firm: 6 / 10

10″/11″/12 Plush/13″: 7.5 / 10

Pressure-relieving mattresses evenly distribute a person’s body weight when they lie down. As a result, pressure points don’t develop in certain parts of the body, like the neck or lower back, which means the sleeper is less likely to wake up feeling discomfort.

The 10-inch, 11-inch, 12-inch Plush, and 13-inch models provide very good pressure relief and the 12″ Medium Firm option performs reasonably well in this category.

The 8-inch Tulo Hybrid Mattress does not relieve pressure as well as the other models. This bed contains only 1 inch of polyfoam. It also doesn’t contain memory foam, a mattress material known for its pressure-relieving qualities.

Temperature Control

6.5/10

10″/11″/12″ Plush/13″: 6 / 10

8″/12″ Medium Firm: 7.5 / 10

Like many hybrid beds, all Tulo Hybrid Mattresses are fairly breathable. Generally, pocketed coil support cores allow for more cooling airflow than the polyfoam support cores found in all-foam beds. As a result, hybrid beds tend to stay cooler throughout the night than all-foam mattresses.

The 8-inch and 12-inch Medium Firm models cool sleepers more than the other Tulo Hybrid Mattress options due to their materials and construction. The 8-inch mattress contains less foam than all other models, while the 12-inch bed contains less memory foam than the other high-profile options.

Memory foam tends to trap heat. For this reason, people who sleep hot might want to opt for a hybrid bed that contains little or no memory foam.

Edge Support

6/10

10″/11″/12″ Plush/13″: 6 / 10

8″/12″ Medium Firm: 7.5 / 10

Strong edge support lets sleepers use the full surface of a mattress without worrying that the edges will buckle under their weight. The 8-inch and 12-inch Medium Firm beds provide the best edge support of all Tulo Hybrid models.

The firm 8-inch mattress contains less foam, which allows the pocketed coils to provide more support around the bed’s perimeter. The 12-inch Medium Firm model has firmer foam comfort layers than the other taller options, which contribute to edge support.

Ease of Movement

5.5/10

12″ Plush/13″: 4.5 / 10

10″: 11″ /

8″: /

12″ Medium Firm: 7.5 / 10

Sleepers who opt for the 8-inch or 12-inch Medium Firm models of the Tulo Hybrid Mattress are likely to enjoy freely moving around the bed without resistance. Since these mattress models are firmer, they don’t conform as closely to the body.

Most sleepers can also move easily on the 10-inch and 11-inch models, though they might face a bit of interference due to the foam comfort layers.

Because they contain even thicker and softer foam comfort layers, movement on the 12-inch Plush and 13-inch models isn’t as easy. These options work well for sleepers who like to sink into their mattress and don’t mind having to exert more effort when getting out of bed or changing sleep positions.

Off-Gassing

6/10

Off-gassing is a normal occurrence in new mattresses that contain foam. For a period of time after unboxing, a mattress releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. This process isn’t harmful, but it can produce an odor that some people find unpleasant.

Tulo Hybrid Mattresses have an average level of off-gassing. This is typical of hybrid beds, which tend to produce fewer VOCs than all-foam models. Most off-gassing from Tulo Hybrids is likely due to the foam comfort layers rather than the pocketed coil support core.

People who find the off-gassing scent bothersome can open windows when they unbox their bed. Those particularly sensitive to smells can wait a night or two before sleeping on the new mattress to avoid any odor, which naturally dissipates with time.

Tulo Hybrid Mattress Review Breakdown

All Tulo Hybrid Mattress offerings feature foam comfort layers sitting atop a pocketed coil support core. With six options, a variety of sleepers can find adequate support from this bed. Differences in thickness of the coil support core, along with varied comfort layer materials and thicknesses, combine to determine the firmness and feel of each mattress option.

People are often drawn to hybrid mattresses because they can combine the pressure relief of foam with the structure and bounce of a coil support core. Unlike traditional innerspring coils, the pocketed coils of the Tulo Hybrid are individually encased. Pressing down on one of the pocketed coils does not cause those surrounding it to compress, resulting in superior motion isolation.

All six of the Tulo Hybrid models contain one or more polyfoam comfort layers. With the exception of the 8- and 10-inch options, the other models also feature a gel-infused memory foam layer measuring either 1 or 2 inches thick. Although they do not cradle the body as much as an all-foam bed might, the Tulo Hybrid options with memory foam excel at pressure relief.

Unlike all-foam mattresses, hybrids tend to be better at remaining temperature neutral. The coil layer in the Tulo Hybrid allows for increased airflow through the mattress. The gel infusion in the memory foam is also intended to have a cooling effect.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

Hybrid mattresses tend to be more expensive than comparable all-foam beds. This trend holds true for Tulo, with the company’s hybrid models costing more than either of its memory foam offerings.

However, the Tulo Hybrid costs less than many competitors’ hybrid beds. In addition to having already low prices, the company also regularly offers sales.

Pricing of the Tulo Hybrid models varies depending on the individual bed’s thickness. The thickest mattresses cost a few hundred dollars more than the thinner mattresses at every size available. But sleepers should ideally choose a mattress’ thickness and firmness based on what best fits their body and sleep habits rather than price.

Depending on the problem, Tulo may replace the entire mattress or repair or replace specific parts.

The Tulo warranty does not cover damage caused by the sleeper or what the company considers to be normal wear and tear. For example, it does not apply to mattresses that are stained or unsanitary, nor does it cover damage resulting from the use of an improper foundation.

The warranty only applies to the original purchaser, and the mattress must be located in the U.S. with the original law tag present in order to qualify. Customers should save their receipt in case they need to exercise the warranty.
