Silk & Snow is a Canadian company founded in 2017 with the goal of making high-quality products accessible and affordable. Its product line consists of mattresses, bed frames, bedding, and more.

The company currently produces three mattress models. All three have a medium firm feel and are set apart by their materials, constructions, and price-points. The Silk & Snow Mattress is the company’s flagship all-foam model, while the Silk & Snow Hybrid is its first hybrid option. The Silk & Snow Organic Mattress was released in late 2020. It uses a hybrid design with sustainable, organic materials. While it is the most expensive Silk & Snow mattress, it is more affordable than the average hybrid model despite its organic materials.

Organic cotton, New Zealand Joma wool, organic latex, and zoned pocketed coils make up the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress. The bed has a balanced feel that combines support, contouring, breathability, and bounce.

We’ll examine the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress’s materials, construction, and pricing. We’ll also break down its performance ratings and relevant company policies to help you decide if it’s the right bed for you.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers often experience the sharpest pressure points because the hips and shoulders are traditionally wider than the rest of the body, therefore pressing harder against the mattress. A bed that adjusts to these curves to distribute the weight more evenly can help a side sleeper rest more comfortably.

The Silk & Snow Organic Mattress’ wool batting cushions the hips and shoulders while the latex molds to their shape to redistribute weight. Since the coil layer is zoned, a side sleeper’s hips and shoulders should be able to sink in more than their lower back to promote proper spinal alignment.

As a medium firm model, the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress is likely to be best suited to side sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds. It should cradle their hips and shoulders without letting them sink in excessively for the right mixture of pressure relief and spinal support. This mattress is also likely to ease pressure for those who weigh more than 230 pounds, though some of these individuals could feel slightly less supported. Most side sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds won’t sink in enough for optimal pressure relief.

Back Sleepers

Back sleeping usually keeps the spine close to its natural alignment, so most who prefer this position just need a mattress that will let their hips dip in a bit without sagging. The Silk & Snow Organic Mattress’ latex comfort layer gently cradles the hips while remaining supportive. The zoned coil layer further reinforces this balance of contouring and support with softer coils in the lower third of the bed and firmer coils in the middle to encourage healthy spinal alignment.

Most back sleepers should receive ample support regardless of their weight. However, the medium firm feel may be closest to ideal for back sleepers who weigh under 230 pounds. Some who weigh over 230 pounds might sink in more around their hips, which could put slightly more pressure on their lumbar region.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleeping can contribute to a variety of aches and pains because this position often puts pressure on the neck and spine. A mattress can minimize this discomfort by supporting the sleeper’s midsection to prevent excessive sagging.

Since the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress’s coil layer is zoned, the bed provides more targeted support that may be beneficial for stomach sleepers, particularly those who weigh less than 230 pounds. Individuals who weigh over 230 pounds might still sink in slightly around their midsections, which could put pressure on their spines.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

6/10

The Silk & Snow Organic Mattress absorbs motion relatively well, though some vibrations may spread across the surface. This is a similar level of motion isolation as most latex and latex hybrid models.

Wool batting dampens surface-level vibrations, and a latex comfort layer further helps absorb movement. The support core’s coils are pocketed to limit the transfer of motion across this layer.

The Silk & Snow Organic Mattress’ motion isolation should be significant enough to reduce disturbances caused by one partner moving during the night. However, its latex and coils both add bounce that could contribute to some movements spreading.

Pressure Relief

7.5/10

Like most similarly constructed models, the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress earns solid scores in pressure relief.

Latex shapes to the body like other types of foam, but its low point elasticity means the compression is spread over a wider area. This gives the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress more of a floating sensation than a hug.

Its coil core is zoned with firmer coils around the middle of the bed for extra support and softer springs near the head and foot. This should help reduce pressure near the hips and shoulders while supporting the spine.

Temperature Control

8.5/10

Since it uses breathable and temperature-regulating materials, the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress should stay cool enough to satisfy even hot sleepers, which is a common trait for hybrid models.

A cotton cover lets air circulate throughout the bed, while a layer of wool batting helps insulate when it’s cold and pull heat away when it’s warm. This combination also wicks away moisture should the sleeper sweat during the night. The latex layer is highly breathable and aerated for enhanced ventilation. The coil core also circulates air and helps dissipate heat.

Edge Support

8.5/10

The Silk & Snow Organic Mattress has a supportive, reinforced edge that’s on par with many hybrid models. The low point elasticity of the latex means that the comfort layer compresses over a wider area rather than directly under the individual’s weight, so sleepers are unlikely to feel like the edge is collapsing beneath them. Additionally, the coils around the perimeter of the support core are firmer to reinforce the structure and prevent sagging.

A sturdy edge can allow sleepers to use the full surface of the mattress, without steering clear of the perimeter to avoid the sensation they may roll off. This may appeal to couples who need as much of the sleep surface as possible. It can also make it easier to sit on the edge of the bed.

Ease of Movement

8.5/10

Since hybrid models are typically more responsive than all-foam mattresses, sleepers shouldn’t experience the “trapped in the bed” sensation sometimes associated with close conforming and a slow response to changes in pressure.

The same holds true for the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress. Its latex comfort layer adjusts to the body, but it quickly regains its original shape when weight is removed. This layer has a naturally buoyant feel, which is enhanced by the responsive coil layer beneath. Most sleepers should be able to change positions and move around on the bed without feeling restricted.

Off-Gassing

8.5/10

While many new mattresses have odors left over from manufacturing, the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress’s smell should be minimal. It could have a faint natural odor from the wool or a slight rubbery smell from the latex, but its use of natural materials means it shouldn’t have any of the chemical smells sometimes associated with synthetic foam. Most owners are unlikely to feel the need to air out their Silk & Snow Organic Mattress before use.

Silk & Snow Organic Mattress Review Breakdown

The Silk & Snow Organic Mattress has a medium feel, rating 6 on the 10-point firmness scale. This puts it on the firmer end of the average range that most sleepers prefer.

A soft-to-the-touch GOTS-certified organic cotton cover wraps around the mattress. This material is breathable so that heat can escape and cool air can flow through. Next, a layer of New Zealand Joma wool batting is quilted into the cover. This quilted layer also contains .75 inches of latex. Wool’s temperature-regulating properties help keep the surface cool when it’s warm out, and warm when temperatures drop. Strong moisture-wicking helps the sleeper stay drier. The wool batting also serves as a natural fire retardant.

The Silk & Snow Organic Mattress’s comfort layer consists of 1.75 inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex, which is durable, resilient, and breathable. Made from the sap of rubber trees, this material is natural and sustainable. Many sleepers compare sleeping on a latex comfort layer to a floating sensation due to the way it redistributes their weight over a wider area.

Pocketed coils make up the support core. Since each coil is encased, motion transfer is limited. The layer is zoned with firmer coils near the middle of the bed and softer coils on the outer thirds to provide targeted support and promote proper spinal alignment. All four edges of the bed use firmer coils to bolster the structure while preventing the perimeter from sagging under a sleeper’s weight.
