The Sealy FlexGrid Mattress uses advanced technology to meet the needs of a wide range of body types and sleep styles. Sleepers can choose from either a hybrid or all-foam model.

Sealy, one of the most established mattress manufacturers in the U.S., features several product lines. These include Sealy Essentials, Posturepedic, Posturepedic Plus, the Cocoon, Sealy Naturals, and the FlexGrid. The FlexGrid falls in the middle of Sealy’s price range options.

A proprietary HexGel material adds a layer of pressure relief and breathability. The gel is engineered to respond to the weight of each sleeper and enhance motion isolation.

Our testing revealed that combination and side sleepers especially benefited from the balance of contouring and support. The hybrid design excels at temperature regulation, making it a suitable option for those who overheat easily. A more affordable price tag makes the all-foam model an appealing option for value shoppers.
We’ll take a closer look at the FlexGrid and examine its construction, performance, and how different sleepers respond to each model to help you determine if it’s the best mattress for you.

  • Choose the foam model if… you want a mattress with excellent pressure-relieving abilities but prefer moderate contouring. The foam layers contour to each sleeper’s shape, and the HexGel helps keep sleepers on top of the mattress. This makes it a good option for those who prefer the feeling of sleeping “on,” rather than “in,” a mattress. While it doesn’t sleep as cool as the hybrid model, we found the foam model offered better temperature regulation than other foam mattresses.
  • Choose the hybrid model if… you want the contouring feel of foam but tend to overheat at night. With a pocketed coil support core, the hybrid offers better airflow and temperature regulation. Those who share their bed will appreciate the bed’s motion isolation abilities, and sleepers who want a responsive yet conforming surface should find the hybrid model meets their needs.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers across all weight categories should find both models offer a balance of contouring and support. Although our side-sleeping testers between 130 and 230 pounds benefited the most from the FlexGrid, sleepers outside this weight category also found the bed provided adequate support.

The memory foam comfort layer prevents pressure points from forming in the shoulders and hips and keeps the spine level. The memory foam moderately contours to the body, making it a good option for sleepers who enjoy the cushioning feel of memory foam but tend to overheat easily.

The HexGel layer consists of individual tiles that move independently for customized support. It’s designed to keep sleepers on top of the mattress rather than allowing them to sink too deeply into the surface. This, along with the polyfoam layer, offers side sleepers over 230 pounds more support than other all-foam mattresses. Additionally, pocketed coils in the hybrid mattress provide sleepers with targeted support.

Back Sleepers

The Sealy FlexGrid Mattress works best for back sleepers under 230 pounds. Testers in this weight category found the mattress promoted proper spinal alignment while preventing excessive sinkage in the hips. Both models conform to cushion the lower back.

In addition to the memory foam layer, the HexGel is designed to cradle the whole body. It stretches around the hips and shoulders for an extra layer of support and pressure relief.

Pocketed coils typically offer back sleepers a slightly more supportive, responsive feel, while all-foam beds have a bit more give. However, our testers didn’t find a noticeable difference between the two FlexGrid models.

Those over 230 pounds felt that the foam and hybrid models performed adequately but lacked the support they needed for optimal comfort. The mattress allows the midsection to sink too far for these sleeper types to maintain spinal alignment.

Stomach Sleepers

Our stomach-sleeping testers under 230 pounds benefited the most from the Sealy FlexGrid Mattress. Since these sleeper types require a more supportive sleep surface, the medium firm (6) feel helps support the midsection for proper spine and neck alignment. Softer foam beds often permit too much sinkage in the hips, allowing the spine to bend into a U shape.

The memory foam in the FlexGrid cushions the hips to prevent pressure points from forming. The HexGel is engineered to naturally bend beneath the sleeper’s weight while preventing excessive sinkage. Both models are a good option for people between 130 pounds and 230 pounds who prefer a mattress with moderate contouring.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

7/10

Both models of the Sealy FlexGrid Mattress received very good marks during motion isolation testing. The hybrid and foam options effectively minimize motion transfer, making the mattress a good choice for those who are easily disturbed at night. The FlexGrid also outperformed other hybrid mattresses, thanks to its memory foam, HexGel, and polyfoam layers.

Our testers found that their partner’s movements were only slightly noticeable on the foam mattress. The memory foam closely contours to each sleeper, preventing movement from traveling from one side of the bed to the other. People who share their bed with a partner, children, or pets should benefit from both options.

Pressure Relief

8/10

Thanks to a memory foam comfort layer and HexGel grid technology, both versions of the FlexGrid offer excellent pressure relief. The comfort layers lightly conform to the body, cushioning the hips and shoulders while maintaining healthy spine alignment.

A layer of HexGel beneath the memory foam helps the mattress contour to each sleeper’s unique shape. The mattress is designed to keep sleepers on top of the mattress and prevent excessive sinkage. Each HexGel honeycomb-shaped tile is constructed to adapt to the individual’s body and position, making it a good option for most sleeper types.

Additionally, pocketed coils in the hybrid model complement the pressure relieving-abilities of the upper layers, allowing the mattress to adjust to the weight of each sleeper.

Temperature Control

7.5/10

The FlexGrid hybrid outperformed the foam model during testing in this category. As is typical of hybrid construction, the pocketed coils allow more airflow, helping to keep sleepers cool. Combined with a breathable HexGel layer, the hybrid option allows body heat to dissipate. Our testers who tend to sleep hot found the hybrid model kept them from overheating throughout the night.

The all-foam model didn’t score quite as high as the hybrid, but it still performed better than other all-foam beds. This is due to the HexGel layer between the comfort layer and support core. The HexGel also adds a layer of breathability that typical foam mattresses don’t have.

We also found that the medium firm (6) feel offered moderate contouring to sleepers, helping to prevent body heat from getting trapped in the mattress.

Edge Support

7.5/10

Our testing indicated that the hybrid and foam models offered similar edge support. Testers, especially those over 230 pounds, experienced some sinkage when sitting on or lying near the edge of the bed. Sleepers who prefer using the entire mattress surface might find the FlexGrid doesn’t offer adequate support.

Thanks to its firmer surface, the foam mattress outperformed similar foam beds during testing. The hybrid construction’s reinforced perimeter helps provide additional support along the edges. However, heavier sleepers might find that they sink excessively when sleeping near the edge of the mattress.

Ease of Movement

6.5/10

While memory foam can inhibit movement, the Sealy FlexGrid Mattress’ surface provides less contouring than typical memory foam beds, helping to keep sleepers on top of the mattress. Our testing team noticed it was easier to switch positions on the FlexGrid than other foam models.

The HexGel layer is intended to enhance the bed’s responsiveness. The material conforms to each sleeper and quickly regains its shape when the weight is lifted.

Our testing showed the pocketed coils in the hybrid model didn’t noticeably improve ease of movement compared to the foam model. Although pocketed coils typically give beds more bounce, our testers found the hybrid and foam models adequately prevented motion from transferring across the bed when their partner moved or shifted positions.

Off-Gassing

7/10

We found the FlexGrid Mattress produced similar off-gassing odors as other foam beds. A CertiPUR-US certification signifies a lack of harmful chemicals in the bed’s materials. While sleepers can expect some off-gassing odors, they are not considered harmful.

Our testers noticed the smell was minimal with both models, making it a good option for people with odor sensitivities.

For best results, place the mattress in a well-ventilated room after unboxing it. Most off-gassing odors should dissipate within 72 hours.

Sealy FlexGrid Mattress Review Breakdown

The Sealy FlexGrid Mattress comes in all-foam and hybrid construction, both of which are wrapped in a cover made of SealyChill fibers, a proprietary treatment applied to the spun fibers designed to keep the mattress cool-to-the-touch. The cover also receives an antimicrobial treatment intended to resist dust mites and allergens.

At 10 inches tall, the foam model features a layer of memory foam atop a HexGel layer engineered for maximum airflow and pressure relief. Our testers found the comfort layer offered moderate contouring and pressure relief while still keeping the spine aligned. A layer of firm polyfoam below helps to evenly distribute weight and provides additional support, offering a more supportive feel than other all-foam mattresses.

The HexGel consists of honeycomb-shaped pockets made of hyper-elastic polymer engineered to cater to the shape of each sleeper. The gel quickly rebounds to its original shape, making it more responsive than traditional memory foam. The HexGel is designed to flex and naturally adapt to pressure, preventing it from feeling too firm or too soft. The bed’s polyfoam support core gives the bed stability and reinforces the upper layers.

Like the foam model, the 12-inch hybrid begins with a memory foam comfort layer above layers of HexGel and polyfoam. All three materials work together to absorb movement and provide optimal pressure relief. With its open pockets, the HexGel improves breathability, helping to keep sleepers cool throughout the night.

The support core features individually pocketed coils, which helps improve airflow and pressure relief. The perimeter is reinforced with durable coils, providing additional edge support along the mattress edges. The combination of pocketed coils and a HexGel layer give the hybrid model excellent temperature regulation.

Both models are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning they are free of harmful substances such as formaldehyde, heavy metals, and flame retardants. Low VOC (volatile organic compounds) emissions signify sleepers will experience fewer off-gassing odors after unboxing the mattress.
