The ReST company manufactures three smart mattress models:

All three ReST beds are airbeds with smart-controlled chambers that can automatically adjust to best fit your body and sleep position. This review focuses exclusively on the ReST Essential Smart Bed, the most simple and affordable model that ReST offers.

The ReST Essential Mattress differs from the ReST Original Bed in terms of price and number of air chambers. It contains three air chambers, compared to the ReST Original’s five air chambers. Although both beds provide smart, customized firmness, the ReST Original gives sleepers a more precisely tailored sleeping surface.

The ReST Bed with Gel Grid is the most expensive of the ReST beds. This mattress is similar to the ReST Original, except it contains a top layer of hyper-elastic polymer grid material. This layer is durable and breathable while providing good motion isolation and pressure relief.

We’ll explain the ReST Essential’s materials, construction, and performance to help you decide if it’s the right model for you. Then, we break down the ReST brand’s policies related to the sleep trial, shipping, returns, and warranty.

Please note: at this time, ReST is no longer accepting new mattress orders.

Mattresses perform differently for different sleepers. Knowing how the ReST Essential Smart Bed Mattress performs for different positions and weight groups can help you determine if it would be a good fit for you.

Side Sleepers

Across all weight groups, side sleepers rate the ReST Essential Smart Bed Mattress highly.

Side sleepers require a mattress that is neither too firm nor too soft, and that balance can be difficult to find. The mattress must allow heavier body parts, like the hips and shoulders, to sink in a bit while still supporting the rest of the body. The ReST Essential’s zoned support core construction and 4-inch conforming memory foam comfort layer work together to provide the balanced support and contouring that side sleepers typically need for spinal alignment and pressure relief.

Back Sleepers

All our testers who sleep on their backs rate the ReST Essential positively.

Back sleepers find the memory foam comfort layer cradles the body, relieving pressure and providing comfort. The ReST Essential’s air chamber support core provides adequate lumbar support, preventing the hips from sinking into the bed too deeply and arching the lower back. Since the bed’s firmness levels are adjustable, back sleepers of a variety of body weights experience comfort and support on this bed.

Back sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds give it the highest possible rating. Those who weigh over 130 pounds will also likely enjoy good support and contouring, but the ample memory foam comfort layer may allow more sinkage than ideal around their hips, potentially putting slight pressure on the lower back even when using the firmest setting.

Stomach Sleepers

Like side and back sleepers, most stomach sleepers find the ReST Essential Smart Bed Mattress meets their needs. Stomach sleepers tend to require the firmest support, so the ReST Essential’s adjustable levels make the bed a good match for them. With a firm mattress, stomach sleepers can maintain spinal alignment and avoid lower back strain.

The bed’s zoned support core works in stomach sleepers’ favor. Stomach sleepers often put more pressure on the middle of the bed, particularly around their hips. With zoned support, the ReST Essential can make this area of the bed firmer while keeping the upper and lower zones of the bed softer. As a result, stomach sleepers can experience more even weight distribution for superior pressure relief.

Because of the 4-inch memory foam comfort layer, the ReST may be most appropriate for stomach sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds. The midsections of those who weigh over 130 pounds may dip too deeply into the thick comfort layer, potentially jeopardizing their spinal alignment regardless of the firmness setting.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

8/10

Most sleepers don’t find motion transfer to be a problem on the ReST Essential Smart Bed Mattress. When one person rolls over or gets in or out of bed, their movements tend not to travel across the surface of the bed. Motion isolation is most important to sleepers who share a bed with a partner, children, or pets.

The ReST Essential’s materials and construction help isolate motion. Memory foam, which makes up the bed’s comfort layer, conforms to the body and generally absorbs rather than transfers vibrations. Also, the air chamber support core in the ReST Essential doesn’t transfer motion the way a coil or even foam support core might.

Pressure Relief

8/10

The ReST Essential Smart Bed Mattress relieves pressure very well. Its unique technology includes a sensor that spans the full surface of the bed. This sensor specifically measures and maps pressure across the bed’s surface. Then, the bed’s internal air pump can adjust the air in zoned air chambers so pressure points are lessened and body weight is more evenly distributed across the bed.

The mattress’ ample 4-inch memory foam comfort layer further enhances the pressure relief by conforming to the sleeper’s shape.

Although the ReST Essential Smart Bed Mattress excels at pressure relief, the ReST Original can relieve pressure to an even greater extent. The two mattress models differ in terms of the number of air chamber zones they contain. Since the ReST Original contains more air chambers (5) than the ReST Essential (3), it can relieve pressure more precisely.

Temperature Control

6.5/10

Most sleepers won’t overheat on the ReST Essential, but its memory foam comfort layer could absorb some body heat. A gel infusion in this layer is designed to transfer warmth away from the sleeper, but some may remain trapped against the body, especially when using softer firmness settings that allow more sinkage. While the ReST Essential Smart Bed should sleep cooler than many models that contain memory foam, it may still feel too warm to hot sleepers.

However, those who tend to sleep hot can upgrade the ReST Essential with BedJet. BedJet is an add-on feature that allows sleepers to program the bed to maintain an ideal temperature (or two temperatures, one on each side of the bed). With BedJet, temperature should never be a problem because the bed automatically cools or heats to maintain the desired temperature continuously.

Edge Support

6.5/10

The ReST Essential Smart Bed Mattress rates well but does not excel in edge support. Edge support is important because it impacts how much of the mattress’ surface is usable. When a bed lacks strong edges, sleepers are at risk of roll-off when they sit or lie near the edge of the bed. Edge support is often most important to sleepers who share a bed with a partner, children, or pets and need to use the bed’s full surface.

The materials in and construction of a mattress affect the strength of its edges. The ReST Essential contains 4 inches of memory foam as its comfort layer. Memory foam compresses under body weight, especially without a structured support core. Firmer settings for the ReST Essential should make the perimeter feel a bit sturdier. However, innerspring and hybrid mattresses tend to have the strongest edges.

Ease of Movement

5/10

Movement across the top of the ReST Essential Smart Bed Mattress shouldn’t be difficult for most sleepers. Because the bed’s firmness level is tailored to each individual body, sleepers don’t have to worry about sinking into the bed too deeply, which is usually the root cause of difficulty moving or getting up.

The ReST Essential doesn’t rate as highly on ease of movement as some other mattresses due to its memory foam comfort layer, however. Memory foam “hugs” the body. This conforming property relieves pressure but can inhibit movement. Sleepers who want a more responsive bed that doesn’t conform as closely to the body would likely be happier with an innerspring or latex mattress.

Off-Gassing

6.5/10

Sleepers can expect a slight odor upon unboxing the ReST Essential Smart Bed Mattress. This odor is due to off-gassing, an occurrence that happens when volatile organic compounds (VOCs) release off of newly manufactured products into the air. The smell doesn’t bother most sleepers and should dissipate within a day or so.

Although many newly manufactured products off-gas to some degree, memory foam tends to off-gas the most out of all mattress materials. Since memory foam makes up the comfort layer of the ReST Essential, this mattress off-gasses more strongly than beds that do not contain synthetic foam.

ReST Essential Smart Bed Mattress Review Breakdown

The ReST Essential Smart Bed Mattress comprises three main layers: a memory foam comfort layer, a sensor layer that monitors the entire surface of the mattress, and an air chamber support core. These layers combine to make the bed 13 inches thick.

This smart bed houses unique technology that allows it to make real-time firmness adjustments as you sleep. The sensor layer measures and maps pressure across the surface of the mattress. It then transmits this information to an internal pump that adjusts the air in three zoned chambers to increase or decrease the bed’s firmness levels. Sleepers can control the bed from any device through the ReST app.

Sleepers may also choose to adjust their mattress’ firmness setup in other ways. In fact, the ReST Essential has three adjustment options:

  • Manual mode: the sleeper manually adjusts each air chamber’s firmness level using the ReST app
  • Position mode: the sleeper programs the ReST bed to switch between two pre-set firmness setups when the sleeper changes sleep positions
  • Auto mode: the ReST bed uses advanced technology to continually adjust the bed’s firmness levels in response to the pressure the body puts on the bed’s surface

A 4-inch memory foam comfort layer rests on top of the air chambers for close-conforming pressure relief. Gel is infused within the memory foam, which is intended to combat heat retention often associated with the hug of memory foam. A layer of sensors rests underneath to allow the ReST Essential to monitor pressure points.

Removable performance fabric covers the ReST Essential Smart Bed Mattress. The nature of the ReST Essential’s construction allows sleepers to easily open the mattress and remove parts if they need replacing. As a result, the bed can feasibly last for decades with only individual components requiring replacement.

Customers may also purchase BedJet technology with their ReST mattress. BedJet is a climate control system that connects to any ReST mattress. Sleepers may program the BedJet to keep the mattress at a specific temperature. An attachment then cools or heats the bed as necessary throughout the night. Sleepers may also assign different temperatures to each side of the bed.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

The ReST Essential Smart Bed Mattress sells at a higher price-point than most all-foam and hybrid beds. This price difference comes from differences in materials and construction. The ReST Essential mattress contains advanced technology not found in the vast majority of mattresses. A sensor spans the bed’s surface and transmits information digitally to an internal air pump through its own Wi-Fi signal, which is reflected in its price.

Of the three ReST mattresses, the ReST Essential Smart Bed is the most affordable. The ReST Essential costs less than the ReST Original and ReST Bed with Gel Grid because it contains three air chambers instead of five. As a result, the ReST Essential’s surface isn’t as finely tuned to a sleeper’s body as the surfaces of the other ReST mattresses.

Customers may upgrade the ReST Essential Smart Bed Mattress by purchasing BedJet. BedJet is an add-on feature that enables the mattress to auto-adjust the temperature throughout the night in addition to its firmness. Adding BedJet increases the mattress’ cost.
