Real Bed comes from Charles P. Rogers, a mattress and bedding company founded in 1855. The company sells an array of dependable hybrid mattresses, bed frames, and bedding, all manufactured at its factory in New Jersey.

The company offers five mattress models that vary in price-point, material, and thickness. Most of the beds have latex-based comfort layers. Out of all five models, the Real Bed has the lowest price-point and is the least firm. With a profile of 12 inches, this mattress is also the thinnest.

The Real Bed features an organic cotton cover and a comfort section made of rayon, wool, and natural latex. Beneath is a support core that contains pocketed coils and another layer of latex, wool, and rayon. The mattress has a firm feel, with a rating of 7 on the 10-point firmness scale.

We will examine the pros and cons of this mattress, including construction, materials, and pricing. We’ll also discuss what types of sleepers the mattress is suitable for to help you decide if it’s the right one for you.

When shopping for a mattress, it is important to consider your sleep position and body weight. The Real Bed Mattress is appropriate for many types of sleepers, but its firmness makes it especially suitable for back sleepers and stomach sleepers.

Side Sleepers

The Real Bed Mattress is suitable for side sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds, but it may be too firm for those under 230 pounds.

Side sleepers exert more pressure on the shoulder and hips during sleep. As a result, they require a mattress that contours to the body and provides pressure relief in these areas. Although the Real Bed’s plush wool layer and responsive coil system provide some contouring, it may not be enough for side sleepers with acute pressure points. As a result, side sleepers under 230 pounds may find that the Real Bed Mattress is too firm to relieve uncomfortable or painful pressure points.

Side sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds sink deeper into the mattress, allowing the mattress to contour more closely to the shoulders and hips to relieve pressure points and encourage proper spinal alignment.

Back Sleepers

The Real Bed Mattress is a good option for back sleepers, particularly those who weigh more than 230 pounds.

Back sleepers tend to benefit most from medium firm mattresses. Soft mattresses allow the lower back to sink in too much, causing an unhealthy curve in the spine. On the other hand, mattresses that are too firm may not provide enough cushion for the lumbar area, which can lead to poor spinal alignment.

The Real Bed has the right balance of firmness and softness to satisfy back sleepers of all body types. However, as with side sleepers, the Real Bed performs especially well for back sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds. For these individuals, the mattress is firm enough to prevent the upper body from sinking in, yet soft enough to cushion the lumbar area for healthy spinal alignment.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers enjoy excellent support from the Real Bed Mattress.

Stomach sleepers typically require medium firm to firm mattresses to maintain a healthy sleep posture. Similar to back sleepers, stomach sleepers may experience excessive sinkage in the abdomen when using a mattress that is too soft. The sinkage may be more pronounced for stomach sleepers who also use lofty pillows. On the other hand, overly firm mattresses may not provide enough cushioning for stomach sleepers to rest comfortably.

The Real Bed offers a nice balance of firmness and plushness to satisfy stomach sleepers. The mattress is firm enough to keep the head and spine aligned, and the wool layer provides the needed cushion for sleepers to feel comfortable.

The Real Bed is a good fit for stomach sleepers of all weight ranges, but it is especially suitable for those who weigh more than 130 pounds, who derive just enough contouring from the mattress to keep pressure points at a minimum.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

6/10

The Real Bed Mattress demonstrates below-average performance when it comes to motion isolation.

Latex is relatively bouncy and it does not absorb movement to the same degree as memory foam. Although pocketed coils isolate more motion than traditional innerspring coils, the bounce from the coil system contributes to additional motion transfer. Bed partners are likely to feel each other’s movements more than they would on a foam mattress, which absorbs motion more efficiently.

The wool and rayon layers add some plushness to the mattress and slightly reduce the amount of motion transfer. Overall, though, those who share a bed with a restless sleeper may prefer a mattress with better motion isolation.

Pressure Relief

6/10

The Real Bed Mattress provides moderate pressure relief.

The wool and latex layers form a loose contour around the sleeper’s body, and the pocketed coils respond individually to pressure. This offers some relief for common pressure points such as the shoulders and hips.

Overall, though, latex and spring systems do not offer the close, pressure-relieving hug of memory foam. Sleepers who experience notable pain or discomfort at pressure points may prefer a bed that conforms more readily to the body.

Temperature Control

8/10

The materials and construction of the Real Bed Mattress are engineered to offer strong temperature control during sleep.

Latex does not retain a significant amount of heat. Moreover, since it does not hug the body very closely, this mattress allows air to move more freely around the body. The coil system facilitates air circulation, unlike foam mattresses, which tend to trap heat and warm the body. These cooling features make the Real Bed a reliable option for hot sleepers or anyone who prefers a breathable mattress.

Edge Support

7/10

The Real Bed Mattress is a suitable option for sleepers who require a bed with reliable edge support.

Steel springs line the perimeter of the bed to create strong, supportive edges. Moreover, the firm surface of the mattress allows for minimal sinking around the perimeter.

Edge support is important for sleepers who have trouble getting in and out of bed. Reinforced edges also allow full use of the bed’s surface area, which is helpful for people who move around a lot at night or who sleep close to the edge of the bed.

Ease of Movement

8/10

Ease of movement is a strong feature of the Real Bed Mattress.

Latex and wool both have a springy feel that prevents the body from sinking too deep into the mattress. This means that the bed quickly bounces back into its original shape, allowing sleepers to move and change positions throughout the night with ease.

Sleepers should find it easier to move around on the Real Bed than they would on plusher mattresses that hug the body and hinder movement.

Off-Gassing

8/10

The Real Bed Mattress has minimal off-gassing. The bed uses natural materials that tend to emit less odors than other common mattress materials. The mattress also holds OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, which means that the materials have been tested for certain harmful substances.

Any odors the mattress initially emits should dissipate within 1 or 2 days of unboxing.

Real Bed Mattress Review Breakdown

The Real Bed Mattress is a hybrid mattress that combines a latex-based comfort system with a coil-based support core. The mattress is 12 inches thick and has a thin wool comfort layer followed by a 3-inch layer of natural latex. The support core consists of a layer of pocketed coils atop a 1-inch base layer of natural latex and wool. The mattress has a natural fire barrier made with eucalyptus-based rayon.

The Real Bed has a firmness rating of 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, or firm, and it provides the typical bounce expected of a latex-based comfort layer. The thin layer of wool adds some initial cushioning to balance out the firmness.

The pocketed coils move independently of one another to provide targeted support for various body types. The perimeter of the bed is reinforced with steel springs to create a sturdy edge.

An organic cotton cover encases the mattress. The cover holds GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification, which means that the material meets strict organic and social standards. In lieu of plastic buttons, Charles P. Rogers uses English felt wool tufts to hold the mattress layers together, which might appeal to shoppers who prefer natural materials. The company attaches the tufts without the use of glue.

Those who prefer a plusher bed may purchase an optional pillow-top for an extra layer of comfort. The Real Bed Topper contains 1 inch of natural latex, as well as a layer of nano springs and eucalyptus-based rayon. The pillow-top is 2.5 inches thick and is encased in GOTS-certified organic cotton.
