The Purple Hybrid mattresses significantly limit motion transfer, which can lead to a more restful night’s sleep for couples. This motion isolation is similar to or better than most other hybrid models.
The walls of the grid only buckle under the sleeper’s weight, which helps prevent motion from spreading. The transition layer acts as an additional buffer that prevents motion from reaching the coil layer. Since coils have a springier feel than foam, they are often associated with more motion transfer. However, the Purple Hybrid models use pocketed coils that move independently of each other. This limits the spread of motion between coils.
Sleepers who wake easily when their partner moves or gets up during the night may appreciate the Purple Hybrid’s strong motion isolation. Since minimal motion travels across the surface of the bed, these individuals may be less likely to notice when their partner moves.

Pros & Cons:
The Purple brand made a name for itself with its proprietary Purple GelFlex Grid comfort layer. This layer uses a hyper-elastic polymer material constructed into a grid pattern. The walls of this grid can collapse and spring back to respond to changes in pressure.
Purple produces three mattress lineups. The Essential collection includes the company’s flagship Purple Mattress, Purple NewDay, and Purple Plus. These beds feature an all-foam design. The Premium collection includes the Purple Hybrid, Purple Hybrid Premier 3, and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. These models use a hybrid design that pairs the Purple GelFlex Grid comfort layer with a coil core. The Luxe lineup includes the Purple Deluxe, Purple Supreme, and Purple Grand, all of which feature a thicker hybrid design made with premium and enhanced materials.
In this review, we’ll detail the construction, sizing, performance, and key policies pertaining to the Purple Hybrid and the Purple Hybrid Premier models. If you are considering purchasing one of these models, our in-depth review will help give you extra insight to decide which option is best for you.
Purple Hybrid Video Review
Watch the video below to see how the Purple Hybrid Mattress performed when put to the test in our lab.
Sleeping Style and Body Weight
Side Sleepers
When a person sleeps on their side, they often experience more pressure around their widest body parts: their hips and their shoulders. The Purple Hybrid’s comfort grid adjusts to allow these body parts to sink in while providing even support to help align the sleeper’s spine.
The comfort layer of this model is 2 inches thick, which may not be deep enough to allow sleepers over 230 pounds to sink in deeply enough to enjoy ideal contouring before reaching the transition layer. However, the mattress’s firmer feel is likely to appeal to most sleepers, regardless of their weight group. Side sleepers under 230 pounds are likely to experience an exceptional balance of contouring and support.
Back Sleepers:
Back sleepers usually prefer an even surface that doesn’t sag. Many back sleepers also appreciate some cushioning and contouring. The Purple Hybrid should be able to accommodate most back sleepers, especially those who weigh under 230 pounds.
The 2-inch comfort layer gives some cradling for back sleepers, while the 7.5-inch layer of coils provides an even surface. The Purple Hybrid Mattress tends to be quite durable, so it shouldn’t develop significant sagging too quickly, continuing to provide an even plane for back sleepers.
Side Sleepers
The Purple Hybrid Premier’s thicker comfort layers can provide more conforming, which may appeal to side sleepers with sharp pressure points near their shoulders and hips.
The Purple Hybrid Premier comes with two different Purple GelFlex Grid thickness options. The Premier 3 is 3 inches thick and the Premier 4 measures 4 inches thick. Either version of the mattress may appeal to side sleepers under 230 pounds since there is plenty of room for them to sink in. Side sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds may prefer the Premier 4 because the extra depth allows more room to sink in before reaching the transition layer.
Back Sleepers
Like the Purple Hybrid, the Purple Hybrid Premier’s coil support core serves as a stable, durable base that should provide sufficient support for most back sleepers.
The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 may appeal to back sleepers who weigh under 230 pounds. The responsive comfort layer gives back sleepers in this weight group some contouring without excessive sinkage. Back sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds may also experience a good balance between contouring and support, though some sleepers might find their hips sink in too deeply.
The Purple Hybrid Premier 4 rates around 5 on the 10-point firmness scale, giving it a slightly softer medium feel. Because of this, the Purple Hybrid Premier 4 may be best suited for back sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds, offering a good balance of softness and support. Back sleepers who weigh over 130 pounds may also experience good support, but the softer feel may allow them to sink in too deeply for proper spinal alignment.
Stomach Sleepers
Because most individuals carry more weight around their midsections, stomach sleepers usually require enough support to prevent their stomachs from sinking in too deeply.
Both versions of the Purple Hybrid Premier have thicker comfort layers than the Purple Hybrid, giving stomach sleepers more room to sink in. While some people from all weight groups may find this extra plushness comfortable, some may feel it allows their midsections to sink in too deeply for proper spinal alignment. This is particularly true for stomach sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds.

Purple Hybrid Mattress Review Breakdown
The Purple Hybrid and the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 and 4 all use a hybrid construction that includes the same cover, several layers of foam, and a pocketed coil core. The difference between the models lies in the comfort layer.
The mattress cover is constructed of viscose, polyester, and lycra. This cover is stretchy so that it can bend and move with the mattress’s comfort layer. It is also breathable to allow air circulation into and out of the mattress.
The comfort layer of all models uses the hyper-elastic polymer Purple GelFlex Grid. This unique material is formed in a grid pattern which contours to the sleeper’s body without trapping heat. The Purple Hybrid uses 2 inches of this material. The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 uses a 3-inch comfort layer, while the Premier 4 uses a 4-inch layer. These thicker comfort systems provide extra contouring.
Next, a 1-inch transition layer of 2 pounds per cubic foot (PCF) polyfoam acts as a barrier to prevent the sleeper from directly experiencing the pocketed coils. A 7.5-inch layer of pocketed coils gives the bed extra bounce and edge support while allowing airflow. A final thin base layer of transition foam is used to support the coil layer.
The Purple Hybrid has a medium firm feel, rating around 6 on the 10-point firmness scale. The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 has a medium firm feel at a rating of 6, while the Purple Hybrid Premier 4 has a medium feel with a firmness rating of 5. These mattresses fall in the range most sleepers tend to prefer.
Because of the different thicknesses of their comfort layers, each of these mattresses has a different height. The Purple Hybrid is Purple’s lowest-profile hybrid model, measuring 11 inches thick. The Purple Hybrid Premier models are 12 inches or 13 inches thick depending on which option you select. Individuals with limited space may prefer a lower-profile option. Sleepers who want more room to sink into their mattress or who struggle to get into or out of a lower bed may prefer a higher-profile option.
