The Puffy mattress is one of three all-foam beds offered by the Puffy company. It rates medium, or 5 out of 10, on the firmness scale, making it a good option for lighter sleepers. The Puffy is their most affordable model, sold at price-points that are about half of the cost of the Puffy Lux, and less than half of the Puffy Royal. Puffy also offers two hybrid models, the Lux Hybrid and Royal Hybrid.

All of the Puffy mattresses are manufactured in the US and come with a lifetime warranty. The major distinguishing feature among them is the difference in mattress height, which is due to differences in comfort foam layers. The Puffy measures 10 inches thick, whereas the Puffy Lux/Lux Hybrid and Puffy Royal/Royal Hybrid measure 12 and 14 inches, respectively.

In this review, we cover all the details you need to decide if the Puffy mattress is a good option for you. We’ll detail how the mattress feels, who enjoys sleeping on it, and what sort of policies Puffy holds in terms of sleep trial, shipping, returns, and warranty.

Side Sleepers

Of all sleepers, those who sleep on their sides enjoy the Puffy mattress the most. The Puffy excels at relieving pressure, which is important for side sleepers. Mattresses that are too firm or don’t cradle the body enough can fail to provide spinal alignment in side sleepers. When the spine isn’t aligned, side sleepers often experience pressure and discomfort in their shoulders and hips.

The Puffy is an especially good choice for side sleepers who weigh 230 pounds or less. They will find the medium firmness provides adequate support and spinal alignment. Heavier side sleepers, however, might need a firmer mattress.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers that weigh under 130 pounds are the sleepers in this group most likely to find that the Puffy meets their needs. With its medium firmness level, the Puffy provides enough lumbar support for most back sleepers under 230 pounds. When a mattress doesn’t provide enough lumbar support, back sleepers might find themselves experiencing lower back discomfort or even pain.

Back sleepers weighing above 230 pounds should seek out a different mattress. The Puffy will not adequately support the majority of sleepers in this group because of its foam construction and softness. A mattress that rates 7 or even 8 out of ten on the firmness scale would be more appropriate for heavier back sleepers compared to the Puffy, which rates 6 out of 10.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers as a group find the least comfort on the Puffy mattress. In general, stomach sleepers tend to prefer more supportive and responsive mattresses. Deeply contouring mattresses like the Puffy can cause stomach sleepers to sink in too far, putting uncomfortable pressure on the neck.

Some lighter stomach or combination sleepers will find comfort in the Puffy, depending on their weight and personal preference. However, the Puffy mattress is likely too soft and conforming for most stomach sleepers who weigh 130 pounds or more.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

8.5/10

The Puffy mattress excels at isolating motion. When movement occurs or weight is put on one part of the bed, it doesn’t cause much motion to transfer across the surface of the mattress. Memory foam and polyfoam are widely known for isolating motion better than other mattress materials, such as springs and coils.

For couples who share a bed, motion isolation is an important quality in a mattress. When a mattress isolates motion well, sleepers don’t have to worry about being bothered by their partner’s movements throughout the night. One person can roll over or get in and out of bed without causing a disturbance.

Pressure Relief

8/10

Pressure relief is another enticing feature of the Puffy mattress. When sleepers lie on a pressure-relieving mattress, they do not develop pressure points. Pressure points are especially common in side sleepers, making the Puffy a good choice for this group.

The cushion and conforming ability of memory foam comfort layers are what make the Puffy pressure relieving. Sleepers who experience pain often seek out mattresses with good pressure relief so they don’t experience increased stiffness and soreness at night.

Temperature Control

5.5/10

Like many all-foam mattresses, the Puffy can tend to trap heat. Memory foam, in particular, is known for retaining and trapping heat. As the memory foam in the Puffy heats up, it conforms to the body. Since there is little room for air to flow, the heat cannot escape.

People who tend to sleep hot might want to opt for a cooler mattress. Many people will be fine with the Puffy, but they might want to choose bedding that helps them keep cool throughout the night. A mattress isn’t the only factor in temperature control. The bedroom temperature, bedding, and sleepwear a person chooses also affects how warm or cool they feel overnight.

Edge Support

6.5/10

The Puffy Mattress provides above-average edge support for an all-foam mattress. The perimeter may sink a bit when you get on and off the mattress or sleep near the edges, but you’ll also notice some bounce-back and decent reinforcement. People who weigh more than 230 pounds will probably sink more but anyone lighter should feel reasonably comfortable along the edges of this mattress. Improved edge support is part of a recent model redesign from Puffy intended to make this mattress more sleeper-friendly.

Soft edges are common in all-foam mattresses. Innerspring and hybrid mattresses tend to have stronger edge support due to their firm coil layers. Edge support isn’t an important factor to all shoppers, though it can matter more for people who have trouble getting in and out of bed.

Ease of Movement

5.5/10

Because the Puffy is an ultra-conforming mattress, it doesn’t provide the easiest surface to move around on. When a sleeper lies on the mattress, the memory foam “hugs” their body. When they move, an impression of their body remains for a period of time. This body impression can inhibit movement.

Innerspring, hybrid, and latex mattresses tend to “bounce back” more quickly than all-foam mattresses, making movement easier. They are springier mattresses that feel responsive and don’t conform to the body as much. Some sleepers greatly enjoy the “hug” of memory foam, however. These sleepers might not move as much during the night, or might be willing to sacrifice ease of movement for the mattress feel they prefer.

Off-Gassing

6/10

The Puffy off-gasses a bit immediately after it has been opened, which is normal for an all-foam mattress. Off-gassing is the result of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) releasing into the air from a new mattress. VOCs are off-gassed from many manufactured products, but their scent is especially noticeable from polyfoam.

Most people won’t be bothered by the smell of the Puffy off-gassing, which should dissipate within a day or so in a well-ventilated room. People who are more sensitive to chemical smells should avoid being in the same room as the Puffy mattress for the first 24 hours after they unbox it.

Puffy Mattress Review Breakdown

As an all-foam mattress, the Puffy provides sleepers with a soft, cushiony feel. Sleepers who enjoy deeply contouring memory foam will like this mattress. Because of its memory foam comfort layer, the Puffy gives sleepers the sensation of being hugged by their mattress. People will feel like they are sleeping “in” the Puffy, rather than resting on top of it.

The cover is composed of polyester woven with cooling fibers, with a thin layer of felted fiber underneath to cushion the surface. The top comfort layer of the Puffy is gel-infused Cooling Cloud memory foam. This layer provides cushion and cradles the body. The gel infusion is intended to help reduce the amount of heat trapped by the mattress. Memory foam commonly traps heat, which can become a problem for sleepers who tend to sleep hot. This foam is engineered to provide extra reinforcement along the edges, though some people may still notice a bit sinkage while sitting or sleeping near the perimeter.

Below the memory foam layer of the Puffy lies 2 inches of Cloud Climate transitional polyfoam. Transition layers are firmer than comfort layers, yet softer than support layers. They provide both support and cushioning. Also, transition layers allow sleepers to feel like they’re being “hugged” by the mattress without sinking into it too deeply.

Transition layers also help promote spinal alignment for side sleepers and reduce pressure points that can develop in side sleepers’ hips and shoulders. Sleepers’ hips and shoulders sink in deeper to the mattress, while the transition layer supports the midsection, so the spine remains straight. The Puffy mattress rates highly with side sleepers because of this dynamic.

The mattress also has a 6-inch base layer composed of Firm Core Support high-density polyfoam, which sits directly below the transitional layer. The polyfoam base provides support to sleepers in all sleep positions. The mattress rates 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, which is considered a medium feel.

Sleepers who weigh up to 230 pounds feel most supported by the Puffy’s medium firmness. Back and stomach sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds also enjoy the Puffy. The medium firmness isn’t adequately supportive for most sleepers over 230 pounds.
