The Newton Crib Mattress is a firm (7) model for infants and toddlers that’s manufactured by Newton Baby. Founded in 2015, Newton Baby aims to help babies sleep more safely and comfortably. In addition to crib mattresses, Newton Baby makes crib-sized sheets and covers, crib and twin-sized mattress pads, and swaddles.

Three crib mattress options are available: the Original, the Essential, and Waterproof. All three are made of a unique polymer support core surrounded by a removable polyester cover. Newton Baby’s proprietary support core material consists of 90% air and 10% food-grade polymer. Because of its airy construction, the Newton Crib Mattress is extremely breathable.

We’ll focus primarily on the Original Newton Crib Mattress but also cover basic information about the Essential and the Waterproof styles. The Newton Crib Mattress is an attractive option to parents looking for a firm, breathable model for their infant or toddler. We’ll cover details of the mattress’ pricing, construction, and performance to help you determine if it’s a good choice for your family.

The Newton Crib Mattress is well-suited for virtually all infants and toddlers. This model provides excellent support and comfort for young sleepers under 130 pounds regardless of their sleep position preferences.

Side Sleepers

Toddlers who prefer sleeping on their sides should enjoy good support that promotes proper spinal alignment when lying on the Newton Crib Mattress. Their weight should also be relatively evenly distributed across the surface, limiting pressure buildup.

Back Sleepers

Generally, parents are advised to have infants sleep on their backs to reduce the risk of SIDS. The Newton Crib Mattress is an excellent choice for back sleepers. Its firmness provides needed support while also feeling comfortable for young sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

To reduce the risk of SIDS, experts typically warn against placing infants on their stomachs to sleep. Toddlers that do so, however, should get the support they need to maintain alignment throughout the night.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Temperature Control

4.5/10

Compared to most foam beds, the Newton Crib Mattress goes above and beyond in terms of temperature control. Parents generally don’t have to worry about their infant or toddler becoming sweaty or overheating on this mattress.

Although it may be classified as a foam model, the Newton Crib Mattress consists of Wovenaire, which is 90% air and 10% food-grade polymer. Air pockets spread throughout make the mattress highly breathable. Cooling air circulation through these pockets prevents body heat from becoming trapped within the mattress as the baby sleeps.

Ease of Movement

4.5/10

Movement on top of the Newton Crib Mattress is very easy, primarily because of the mattress’ firmness and materials. The mattress rates 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, making it a firm bed. As a result, infants and toddlers lie on top of the bed rather than sink into it. The mattress materials don’t “hug” the body, so there’s little to no resistance when an infant tries to move around on the surface of the mattress.

In addition to making movement easy, a firm mattress is safer for infants because it doesn’t conform as much to the body.

Off-Gassing

5/10

The Newton Crib Mattress off-gasses very little and is GREENGUARD Gold certified, indicating that it has undergone chemical emissions testing.

Off-gassing is the process of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) releasing from manufactured materials. Some mattress materials, such as memory foam, tend to off-gas quite a bit. Although off-gassing is generally considered harmless, some people are concerned by associated odors. While the Newton Crib Mattress produces very little odor, some families may prefer to let it air out in a separate room before introducing it into a nursery. Within a couple of days, most smells should be undetectable.

Newton Crib Mattress Review Breakdown

The Newton Crib Mattress is a firm model designed for infants and toddlers. It rates as a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This crib mattress only comes in one firmness option, but there are three style options available, giving parents multiple price-points to choose from. The varieties include:

  • The Original
  • The Essential
  • Waterproof

The Essential Newton Crib Mattress sells at the lowest price of the three options because it’s the thinnest option, measuring 4 inches thick. The Original costs a bit more because it’s 5.5 inches thick and has a dual-layer cover designed for extra comfort. Like the Original, the Waterproof is 5.5 inches thick, but it includes a waterproof TPU barrier to shield against accidents. As a result, the Waterproof costs the most of the three crib mattress choices.

A Wovenaire core sets the Newton Crib Mattress apart from others on the market. This material is made up of 90% air and 10% food-grade polymer, making the model more breathable than many crib mattresses. The bed’s removable, quilted cover is made of polyester. Both the cover and the core are washable. The cover can be washed in a washing machine, while the core may be washed by hand using soap and water.

All three crib mattresses by Newton Baby carry GREENGUARD Gold certification, which means that independent testing has determined they produce low chemical emissions. As a result, the Newton Crib Mattress may be less detrimental to indoor air quality than some competing crib mattresses that contain foams.
