Latex for Less is an online mattress brand that has been in business since 2014. As the name suggests, this company specializes in products made from natural latex. This review will focus on the flagship Latex for Less Mattress, which is also the brand’s only current mattress model.

The Latex for Less Mattress is flippable, and each side is designed for a different firmness. You can choose between two thickness profiles for your Latex for Less Mattress: 7 or 9 inches. Both are considered lower than average profiles.

One side of the 9-inch Latex for Less Mattress is constructed with a Talalay latex comfort layer and offers a medium feel, which corresponds to a 5 on the 1-10 firmness scale. The other side features Dunlop latex and has a firm (7) feel. Because this mattress is flippable, each latex comfort layer serves as the bed’s support core when the other side is being used. Both sides also feature layers of natural wool for extra padding, and the entire mattress is encased in a cover made from organic cotton certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).

The 7-inch model is slightly different. For this mattress, a single layer of Dunlop latex is used; one side of this layer is designed for a medium (5) feel and the other is designed for a firm (7) feel. However, because this mattress has a shorter profile, it feels a bit firmer on each side than its 9-inch counterpart. The 7-inch model also contains padding layers of natural wool batting on both sides, as well as the same GOTS-certified organic cotton cover.

Choose a 7-inch mattress if:Choose a 9-inch mattress if:
You prefer sleeping on mattresses with exceptionally low profiles. Some sleepers find shorter mattresses more comfortable. These typically include adults who weigh less than 130 pounds, as well as children.

Since this model is so short, both sides of the mattress are fairly firm; you may have a harder time distinguishing between the medium and firm feels.
You would like a slightly thicker mattress. The 9-inch Latex for Less Mattress is still considered a low-profile bed, but the additional two inches offer extra padding and support for people who weigh 130 pounds or more.

The differences between the bed’s medium and firm feels are more noticeable on this model.

Side Sleepers

Although the medium side of the 7-inch Latex for Less Mattress feels softer than the firm side, neither surface conforms very much. As a result, this model may not feel very comfortable for side sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds. These individuals typically need a plusher mattress that cushions the shoulders and hips to align the spine and alleviate pressure points.

Side sleepers who weigh 130 pounds or more – particularly those in the 230+ range – may experience feelings of bottoming out on this mattress.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers need more support for their torso and waist because they carry more weight in these areas. Both sides of the 7-inch model should provide good overall support for back sleepers who weigh 230 pounds or less, though the firm side will probably sag less.

Back sleepers who weigh 230 pounds or more will likely experience more sagging on the 7-inch model. We expect the 9-inch Latex for Less model to be more comfortable for back sleepers who weigh at least 230 pounds.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers generally need more support between their shoulders and hips, which ensures their bodies won’t sink too deeply when they lay face-down on the mattress. The 7-inch Latex for Less mattress provides decent support and won’t sag too much for stomach sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds.

By contrast, stomach sleepers who weigh 130 pounds or more will probably feel less comfortable on this mattress. The 7-inch Latex for Less model is prone to deeper sinkage around the chest, stomach, and hips for these stomach sleepers.

Side Sleepers

Since each side of the 9-inch Latex for Less has a distinct feel, both surfaces are best suited to people who fall into different weight groups. The medium side of this model provides excellent cushioning and support for side sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds. This can help align the spine and reduce pressure throughout the body. The balance of contouring and responsiveness will work for most other side sleepers as well, though some may find it too soft or too firm.

The firm side of this mattress offers excellent support for side sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds. They’ll feel enough padding beneath their shoulders and hips without sagging too much in these areas, and this helps to ensure even spinal alignment and less overall pressure. Side sleepers who weigh 130 pounds or less will probably find this side too firm, and may experience added pressure as a result.

Back Sleepers

The medium side of the 9-inch Latex for Less Mattress is best suited to back sleepers who weigh up to 230 pounds. These individuals should be able to rest on an even plane across the bed’s surface without sinking too much at the torso and waist. Back sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds will probably experience too much sinkage on the medium side, making it less comfortable for them.

The bed’s firm side, however, is much better suited to back sleepers who weigh 130 pounds or more. Because this side conforms less to the body, back sleepers in this weight group experience very little sinkage and should remain on a fairly even plane. Those who weigh less than 130 pounds will probably find this side a bit too firm.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds will probably prefer the medium side of the 9-inch Latex for Less Mattress. This surface conforms enough to alleviate pressure without losing support and sinking excessively. Stomach sleepers who weigh 130 pounds or more will probably feel that this side allows for too much sink to be comfortable.

Stomach sleepers over 130 pounds will probably feel much more comfortable on the 9-inch model’s firm side. Minimal conforming and strong support ensures their bodies won’t sag or sink too much in certain areas. For stomach sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds, this side may feel too firm and not contour closely enough to reduce pressure points.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

5.5/10

The 9-inch Latex for Less Mattress isolates motion better than its 7-inch counterpart, but both beds absorb movement and reduce motion to a moderate degree. Latex has some natural responsiveness but the material also conforms a bit, so the surface is not too springy.

That said, the 9-inch model is going to be better suited to couples. The 7-inch model’s lower profile makes it less supportive and more susceptible to feelings of bottoming out.

The Latex for Less Mattress is also fairly quiet. This attribute, coupled with its motion isolation, makes the bed a good option for people who awaken easily due to their sleep partner’s movements.

Pressure Relief

6/10

The 7-inch Latex for Less Mattress does not conform very closely on either side. While the medium surface contours a bit more than the other, both sides feel fairly firm. This model may not alleviate pressure for side sleepers, people who weigh less than 130 pounds, and other individuals who feel most comfortable on a closely conforming mattress.

The 9-inch model feels a bit plusher on its medium side. This side of the mattress should offer adequate pressure relief for side sleepers and people who weigh less than 130 pounds. The firm side is better suited to back and stomach sleepers who weigh at least 130 pounds. These sleepers won’t sink too much around the torso and waist, and they should feel less pressure throughout their bodies as a result.

Temperature Control

7.5/10

Temperature control is a major strength of both the 7-inch and 9-inch Latex for Less models. This is mostly thanks to the materials used in these mattresses. The latex is ventilated with tiny holes to promote airflow throughout the interior, which helps the bed maintain a cool and comfortable temperature.

The wool batting layers also regulate temperature and help to wick away moisture from your body. The organic cotton covers are exceptionally breathable, as well.

All-latex mattresses can be a comfortable alternative to people who feel too hot sleeping on foam. Solid latex can absorb and trap body heat, but the ventilated latex found in models like the Latex for Less Mattress is typically much more breathable.

Edge Support

6.5/10

The 7-inch Latex for Less Mattress offers surprisingly strong edge support, given its low profile and all-latex composition. Many similarly constructed models feel much weaker along the perimeter.

The 9-inch Latex for Less Mattress offers stronger edge support by comparison. You’ll still feel a bit of sinkage on the medium side, and slightly less on the firm side, but weak edge support is not a major issue.

Ease of Movement

7/10

Mattresses made with foam comfort layers tend to sink quite a bit, and this can make moving across the bed more difficult. Latex has a springier, more responsive feel. You’ll sink a bit, but the material has noticeable bounce-back and moving across the mattress surface should not be too uncomfortable.

The 7-inch and 9-inch Latex for Less models are each fairly easy to move across for most people. Those who weigh more than 230 pounds may have a bit more difficulty because their bodies sink more beneath the surface.

Off-Gassing

7.5/10

Most mattresses produce some initial odor after they are removed from their shipping boxes. Beds with foam layers tend to emit the strongest and most persistent off-gassing smells. Latex models like the Latex for Less Mattress do not have as much odor potential. The smells are fainter and will usually dissipate much faster.

The Latex for Less models contain ventilated latex layers. By promoting air circulation throughout the interior, these mattresses tend to air out rather quickly and should not retain any bothersome smells after a few days. For faster results, consider placing the unboxed mattress in a well-ventilated room for a day or two before sleeping on it.

Latex for Less Mattress Review Breakdown

The 7-inch Latex for Less Mattress is constructed with a 6-inch layer of ventilated natural Dunlop latex. One side of this layer has a medium (5) feel, and the other side has a firm (7) feel. The 7-inch model also includes half an inch of natural wool batting on both sides, which serves as the bed’s fire barrier, along with a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover.

The 9-inch model is constructed with two individual latex layers. The medium (5) side has a 2-inch layer of ventilated Talalay latex, and the firm (7) side contains 6 inches of Dunlop latex. Talalay latex tends to be lighter and plusher than Dunlop latex, which is fairly dense. Using both latex types creates two more distinct feels for the 9-inch model. As with the 7-inch mattress, this model also includes a half-inch of natural wool batting on each side and a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover.

Both the 7-inch and 9-inch models are considered low-profile mattresses because they measure less than 10 inches thick. There are no customization options aside from the two available profiles.
