The Helix Plus Mattress is a luxury mattress geared toward sleepers who require strong support from their bed. The hybrid construction and firm (7) feel provide even spinal alignment and comfort for sleepers who weigh above 130 pounds. The model is an excellent fit for people who want pressure point relief and robust support, as the pocketed coil support core and foam comfort system successfully provide both.

Helix manufactures many different mattresses, including a kid-specific model. The flagship Helix Mattress is available in several firmness levels to suit a range of sleepers. The company also sells compatible bed bases, bedding, and pillows designed to complement their mattresses.

The mattress is available in two higher-end versions. The Plus Luxe features a Euro-top surface, multi-zone coils for targeted midsection support, and two options for a cooling cover. You can learn more about this option in our Helix Luxe Mattress Review. The Plus Elite further builds on the base design with a deep comfort system of foam and microcoil layers and a cover made of GlacioTex phase change fabric. For more details about this model, check out our Helix Elite Mattress Review.

This review will focus on the standard Helix Plus. We’ll break down its components, design, and performance. The review also covers the Plus’ value and durability, which sleeper types and weight groups are best suited to the mattress, and Helix’s shipping, return, and warranty policies.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers need the most cushioning of any sleeper type. When you sleep on your side, much of your weight rests in your hips and shoulders. This position can lead to uncomfortable pressure points and hot spots when sleeping on a mattress that’s too firm.

This model features dense memory foam that provides substantial pressure point relief for sleepers over 230 pounds. The pocketed coil support core is strong enough to keep side sleepers’ spines evenly aligned without allowing excessive sinkage.

Those who weigh under 230 pounds don’t compress the foam enough for it to contour as effectively. Side sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds found the mattress too firm for comfort, while those between 130 pounds and 230 pounds found it adequate.

Back Sleepers

Like side sleepers, back sleepers need a balance of pressure relief and spinal support. However, back sleepers tend to prefer a firmer mattress because it offers more support to their lower back. The Helix Plus is an excellent pick for back sleepers above 130 pounds, as it keeps their spines evenly aligned while gently contouring to their individual shape. Back sleepers under 130 pounds found this model too firm.

The memory foam and polyfoam have formulations specifically designed for sleepers above 130 pounds. These layers successfully cushion without sagging or sinking beneath your weight. The pocketed coil support core has a strong structure that keeps back sleepers’ spines evenly supported.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers need the most support and least contouring of any sleeper type. A mattress that’s too soft doesn’t adequately support stomach sleepers’ spines, causing them to bend into an uncomfortable U-shape.

The Helix Plus Mattress delivers firm support that stomach sleepers above 130 pounds found exceptionally comfortable. The firm foam layers don’t allow stomach sleepers to sink into the mattress the way they might on a softer model. The pocketed coil core also helps keep stomach sleepers feeling as if they’re sleeping on instead of in their mattress.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

7.5/10

The comfort system’s memory foam and polyfoam layers are adept at isolating motion. The memory foam absorbs movement, preventing it from traveling across the bed. The resulting surface is quiet and has little to no bounce.

Sleepers who prefer a responsive sleep surface should opt for a model with thinner foam layers above the support core so that they can experience more bounce from the springs. However, this model is an excellent pick for light sleepers and couples. When you shift sleeping positions, the motion doesn’t disturb your partner.

Pressure Relief

7.5/10

The dense memory foam and polyfoam work together to prevent and alleviate pressure point discomfort. The memory foam contours to each sleeper’s body shape, absorbing impact to better cushion pressure-prone areas, like the hips and shoulders.

The foam layers have firm formulations that work best for sleepers who weigh over 130 pounds, as lighter sleepers can’t compress the foam as effectively. The firmness and density are also helpful for sleepers who enjoy the feeling of sleeping on, rather than in, their bed.

The polyfoam and lower memory foam layers are firm enough to prevent sleepers from sinking into the support core, while the upper memory foam layer offers top-notch pressure relief.

Temperature Control

8/10

The pocketed coil support core allows air to circulate, which helps this model achieve above-average marks for temperature control. However, its dense foam layers are prone to heat absorption. The temperature control is adequate for people who don’t sleep too warm, but the hottest sleepers may prefer a mattress with lower-density or less foam in its construction.

The Tencel cover does an adequate job of allowing air to flow freely through the fabric, but those looking for maximum temperature neutrality should opt for the optional cooling cover, which is engineered to help wick excess heat and moisture.

Edge Support

9/10

The pocketed coil support core receives additional reinforcement from the high-density polyfoam wrapping its perimeter. As a result, the edges are strong enough to prevent the mattress from sagging excessively when you sit on the edge. However, people above 230 pounds may notice some compression when sleeping on the mattress’ edge.

People who have a tough time getting in and out of bed as well as those who use the entire mattress surface should look for a mattress that uses higher-gauge coils as perimeter reinforcement instead of polyfoam.

Ease of Movement

7/10

This model is a suitable option for sleepers who prefer a mattress that bridges the gap between contouring and responsiveness. The pocketed coil support core gives the mattress some bounce, while the foam comfort system adds a cradling sensation.

Most sleepers should move easily across the mattress, though the memory foam layers slightly inhibit movement. Sleepers who favor more resilience and responsiveness can opt for an innerspring mattress with less foam or a latex model, though they may experience less pressure relief and motion isolation as a result.

Off-Gassing

7.5/10

Off-gassing is the release of chemicals produced during the polyurethane manufacturing process. These trace chemicals are not considered harmful, though they do have an unpleasant smell.

The foam has a noticeable odor that dissipates over time. People particularly sensitive to smell or those with respiratory problems should unwrap their mattress in a well-ventilated room and wait at least 24 hours before using it.

Helix Plus Mattress Review Breakdown

The Helix Plus Mattress is a firm (7) hybrid mattress that incorporates multiple types of foam and pocketed coils. With a 13-inch profile, sleepers may need to consider purchasing deep pocket sheets. Customers can pick between two cover materials: a breathable Tencel fabric or upgrade to the patented GlacioTex Cooling Cover designed to wick away moisture and excess heat.

This model’s comfort system starts with a layer of memory foam that offers the familiar, ultra-conforming feel that sleepers enjoy from the material. The layer contours closely to your body’s shape to alleviate pressure point discomfort. A polyfoam layer below is formulated to perform similarly to latex. While our testing determined that it doesn’t share latex’s high responsiveness and bounce, it is firm enough to prevent sleepers from sinking too deeply into the layers beneath it.

The final layer in the comfort system includes firmer memory foam than the top memory foam layer. This layer provides some contouring and also keeps sleepers comfortably situated on top of the mattress.

The pocketed coil support core features individually wrapped coils that are taller than the standard size to better support sleepers over 230 pounds. High-density polyfoam wraps the coils around their perimeter to increase edge support, and a thin polyfoam base layer provides additional durability and stability. The Helix Plus Mattress is available in six dimensions, including twin XL and California king.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

While the Helix Plus Mattress’ multiple layers, high-quality materials, and complex design prevent it from having a more affordable price-point, the cost is on-par with other high-end hybrid mattresses. Helix offers several quality mattresses, and the Helix Plus is one of the company’s top-of-the-line products.

Our sleep lab testing found that this model is highly durable and likely to have a long lifespan, which may be worth it to shoppers willing to spend more for a longer-lasting mattress. Budget-conscious shoppers who need a complete bedroom setup can take advantage of Helix’s bundle options, which include mattress foundations, protectors, and pillows. Hot sleepers who don’t mind purchasing an add-on should consider the GlacioTex Cooling Cover, which increases the mattress’ overall cost but is designed to lower heat retention.

The Helix Plus Mattress carries a 15-year warranty that covers standard issues, such as cracks and defects. Shoppers worried about spills and stains can choose to add 10-year accidental coverage to their mattress for a fee. Those who qualify can opt for financing through an approved third-party company.
